How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

Ok so I did some researching, I am going to do the following and purchase the following:

Port 02 stock housing to 3in and get it ceramic coated
Get manifold cermic coated
Get down pipe ceramic coated
Clean up engine bay
Pull turbo and get the wastegate flapper door opened
BUY BLACK TOP CAS (its more accurate)
BUY 6-Bolt Findanza Flywheel
BUY Solid 2g Poly Motor Mounts

I have the XS power HUGE FMIC kit, since the 1g TB is bigger, check to see it it matches the Elbow bracket, if not port to match

Is it worth to get a lightened pulley?

I still need a updated FAQ on the swap with lots of pictures AND ANY OTHER RECOMENDATIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED!

The only problem I see is that you are never going to get the stock O2 housing to 3". You can get around 2.5 and thats it. If you want a 3" O2 housing you are going to have to go tubular. And stay away from the lightend/underdrive pully to put one on you have to remove the stock harmonic balancer. Just buy a new stock pully/balancer. Just my .02 Good luck.

Any one know what drive plate I can use?

I have a 93 talon TSI fwd.
I am swapping my old 7 bolt engine to a 6 bolt and have an automatic transmission the torque converter has 4 bolts to bolt up to the drive plate.
All that I can find are 3 bolt/tabed drive plates.

Is my converter really from a 93?
Is there any 6 bolt engines that came with a 4 bolt: drive plate/ flexplate/ torque converter?

any ideas?

Here is what i have in my 93 TSi:

anyone have any part #'s or recomendations

.

I have been told that the 1g's have a 4 tab 6 bolt drive plate but I call the dealerships and they pull up a 3 tab. does anyone know what year and model the 4 tab comes on?

I found it!

If you have the 4 bolt torque converter you need the 90 - 92 AWD drive plate.
It is slightly different meaning it looks like you will need the spacer/adaptor kit.

dealer part #s

MD735674 (4 bolt converter side and 4 bolt crank)

MD952138 (drive plate adaptor plate)

I'll let you know how it goes in.
I will also have it listed on the sls forum with more pictures:

Hey, I have a 92 Talon TSi Awd that I am looking to rebuild the engine on, but before I pull it and everything I am looking for a sure fire way to determine whether it is a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt engine. I have read that anycar that is produced after 4/92 was changed to the 7 bolt. My car is labeled May 92. That there should tell me that it is a 7 bolt, but then I also noticed that you can tell by checking the oilpan. Well I checked today and I have a 6 bolt style oilpan. Is there anything that I can check easily that will confirm exactly what it is?

If you have a 6 bolt oil pan then you have a 6 bolt motor. The 6 bolt and 7 bolt pans are not interchangeable as far as I know.

Ok situation updated...Never got that motor, but instead got a full 6 bolt minus the exhaust manifold and turbo (going to use my own).

Any thing else I should do to the motor besides BS removal kit? ARP headstuds? Metal Gasket?

Arp headstuds, balance removal and a good composite gasket. Do not do steel unless you are getting the block and head resurfaced.

OK, I was shopping around tuners and Ebay for ARp headstuds, There are also main studs avaible for our motors. Should I buy those too? Instalation process?

I have a 95 awd talon that i want to put a six bolt in. The six bolt engine is from a 91 laser turbo fwd. both are manual transmission's. Can i use my 95 awd transmission on the six bolt block or are the bolt locations and the housing itself different?? thanks

I've searched the forums but not found the answer to my doubt. I have a 1G 7 bolt(94), and also have a set of (4) 1G 6 bolt(91) pistons w/ rods and rings. Will the 6 bolt set fit ok, or do I need to change anything? What is the best set for my 7 bolt engine? They are all non-turbo parts. Thanks!

but will the 6 bolt set work without changing the rods? I've heard that 91 rods are longer than others, but do I need to change them to fit my 7 bolt crank?

6 bolt rods will not fit on 7 bolt crank, and vice versa. 91 rods are no longer than any other 4g63...not possible, if they were it wouldnt be a 2.0. All 1g rods are the same, all 2g rods are the same. Granite...the 1g rods are beefier but they retain the same length.

Rod length has nothing to do with displacement. All stock 2.0 rods are the same length though. But many companies do make longer rods.

yes, they do make longer rods, but not for a 2.0 application. The longer rods you are referring too are for de-stroked applications like the 2.1, you need the longer rod for the increased deck height with the 2.4 block, there is noone out there that makes a longer rod for a 2.0, it makes no sense. And i wasnt implying that a longer rod would change displacement, i was saying if there was a longer rod, it wouldnt be a 2.0 that they were referring too with a longer rod, i did word it a bit wrong.

Hi
I'm building a 6 bolt engine for my 1992 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. My friend used to have a talon which was a 7 bolt engine which he crashed so I got some parts out of it. Anyways my question is that today I took my engine apart and my 6 bolt pistons look a little different from the one I got of his engine. To me it looks like his are much lighter and stronger. So my question is can I use his pistons in my engine? And what are the pluses or minuses in doing that?
thanks guys
Dmitry
