How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

How much are you planning to spend? You should be able to find a 6 bolt for less than $2500, might be a '90, or '91 though. AWD or FWD?

Crankwalk isn't near as bad(as often) as what people might think.

There shouldn't even be the question of FWD or AWD. If your looking for fun i'd go with a AWD.
You can do the 300+HP in a FWD but either be alright with wheelhop or spend a few extra hundred in suspension... hell my old (basically stock)96 spyder gs-t had wheel hop like mad and that was from a bad front motor mount.

Well I'm looking to spend maybe anywhere between $3000 to $3500. I think that I am going to end up with the 93 AWD. How much horsepower can these cars take without very many problems. I know that obviously if your hard on a car its going to have problems. But will I run into any expensive things with the 93 7 bolt main? And I have heard that the transmissions arent the best in them. How much does it cost to upgrade the transmission?

double post owns u. Our trannys can take a good deal of power. Really the " borderline " turbo on our cars is the big and evo 3 16g. If you go any bigger you usually run into lots of problems. Still expect problems with that turbo, yet alone when the car is stock.

Also the price really varies. If you go with a john shepherd racing tranny.. www.shepracing.com .. its 2k. Everyone runs that transmission b/c well its the best. Stock rebuild isnt near as expensive but the shep tranny will hold alot more and longer.

ok.......

here is my question.....

if 1gb owners like myself that are stuck with a 7 bolt engine only need to replace the flywheel, why does slowboy sell the kit for the 1gb's and 2g's at the same incredible low low price of $1300. I have even called them for info on the swap only to get the "u need to buy the whole kit" answer.

if i knew that all i needed to do was to get a flywheel for my 7 bolt 1g to swap a 6 bolt in, it would have saved me so much time and money.

the lack of info on the subject though, cause me to go a different route. :notgood:

just thought this thread was interesting.

There are a lot of things you can do, first pull them out of your 7 bolt.....

7 bolt pistons will fit a 6 bolt block.

If you want a better answers, be more discriptive with your question. Like we have said before. If you don't have the time to create a complete though, people on here do not have time to make a complete answer,

The 1gb 7 bolt to 6 bolt swap only requires the 6 bolt flywheel. All the mounts and sensors are the same(the 7 bolt has the black top cas which will work fine on the swap) and the head and intake are the same as a 6 bolt. Basically, all you really need is the 6 bolt short block and flywheel but if you get the head also, all your original parts will work on it. I know this for a fact because I had a 93 tsi and still have a 92 tsi and everything was the exact same except for short block, flywheel, and cas. I also built the engine in both myself so I was able to compare parts to see the real difference for my self. And contrary to popular belief, the water cooled oil filter housing is even the same. I installed my stock 6bolt housing on my 7 bolt because the 7 bolt was contaminated with metal shavings and I was just too lazy to clean it when I already had a clean one sitting.

Yeah, it's here somewhere, I saw it. Sorry I don't have the link. But basically, the 1G rod has to be machined. There is a post here I believe, where there is an image attached. I saw it somewhere.

If anyone knows you should tell him, don't be an ass and tell him he doesn't provide enough info. He has. He wants 2G pistons on 1g rods, it's a straight forward question.

By the way, you did ask it the wrong way though, cause a 93 or 94 is also a 7 bolt, but it has 1G pistons ;)

hey i just went to pick up the eagle talon i bought yesterday. i am looking for a bottom end(block) for it. how do i know if it is a 6 or 7 bolt. because i can get a 6 bolt right now for 150 and i want to act fast.

I'm not sure if you're asking if you currently have a 6-bolt or whether you're wondering if the engine you're buying is a six-bolt.

Either way, VFAQ.com has a quick guide to visually telling the difference between a 6-bolt and 7-bolt engine while it's still in the car. If it's out of the car, count the number of bolts securing the flywheel to the crank.

And more specifically, if this car is the 91 Talon in your profile, it's a 6-bolt.

Yet you want to elude to the point that "I" am an ass because I didn't take the time to find the layout on how to machine the rodas for him and give him the answer. Yet you posted with no answer.. who's the ass here?

Thanks very much for the very very informative post!!!!! there is hope for my engine yet!!!

I have a set of rods and pistons I thought were 6 bolt, but now I'm not sure. The pistons have the usual turbo designation on their faces but also have F1 embosed (my '92 Talon does not have F1). I have recently seen photos of 7 bolt pistons with the same F1. My question is how can I tell what engine the rods are from. Even if the pistons are 7 bolt, the rods might be 6 bolt modified to fit them. :thumb: I appreciate any help. Thanks

if i remember correctly the rod bolts on 6 bolt big rods use a 14mm nut, and the ones on 7 bolt small rods use a 12mm nut. it has been some time since i worked on a 7 bolt though
