How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

ok i give up on searchin its a simple and stupid question. is my 91 eclipse gsx a 6 bolt or 7 bolt. its a 7 bolt right thanks and sorry for wasting your time

Its a 6 bolt

6 bolt = 90-92.5
7 bolt = 92.5 and up

i don't think YOu would have to modify any thing just use the 6 bolt flywheel and clutch and should be fine.but not sure

All 90-94 transmissions will bolt onto any 90-94 engine. There are some internal differences in the trannys, but the case is the same.

As far as which block will make more power, in general the 6 bolt will. 6 bolt motors have stronger rods than the 7 bolt motors, but both motors should be able to support 400hp with proper tuning. Hope this helps you out.

thanks

uhh i think its a 6......i think all 7s are 95+ not sure though

first don't give information unless your sure what your talking about. do your research and then post correct fact. this is probably the reason your still rookie status.

and here you go Sherm. you would have no problem having the time to check this first hand.. :thumb:

You should be doing your own research, but I feel generous tonight.

Hi i have a newbie question (hence in the newbie section). I have decided to stick a rebuilt or used 6-bolt engine (still looking for one) in my newly purchased 97 GSX soley because i have 111k on the 7 bolt engine, theres more "potential" in a 6-bolt engine and "crankwalk" is starting to scare me. i tried looking up information on the FAQs and the search options but i cant find an answer (maybe because i didn't look through "all" 500 pages). i just want to know that once i install the 6 bolt engine does it lessen the weight on the car compared to a 7bolt. in other words is the 6 bolt lighter than a 7 bolt, and if so could you guys estimate/approximate by how much.

would you guys also recommend me to some places to where i may be able to find rebuilt/used 6 bolt engines? I'm from SF, CA. i keep finding 1st gen AWD dsms for cheap (junkyard, community) but the mileage on the engines are far worse then mines.

Thanks for you guys' time.

there is a place in Sacramento that will sell you a rebuilt 6 bolt for about 1 grand. And on the matter of the weight the 6 bolt is heavier and 7 bolt lighter. Its lighter due to mitsu making it lighter and cheaper. cheaper causing the crank walk from not enginering it to the extent they did with the 6 bolt. hope that helps and I will get back to you with the # for that motor

Buy a 6 bolt in good condition and build it up. DO NOT SWAP OUT A PERFECTLY GOOD MOTOR. If there is nothing wrong with your 7 bolt leave it in the car til there is something wrong with it. You are setting yourself up for a lot of unnecessary work for no gain. Crankwalk is overrated, I ran 12's with a "walking" 7 bolt. If and when the 7 bolt does take take a crap then you will have the backup motor.

Thats good to know. just too many people and their stories of "crankwalk this and crankwalk that" as of now even if my car is at 111k its running strong. i guess ill take the advice of having a 6 bolt motor as a backup :thumb: . for a grand that is not cheap nor is it expensive...affordable. would it be OK Birt96gst if you could tell me where the shop might be in Sacramento. it like 1-2hours away but in the long run it might be worth it. thanks for your guys's help, if it weren't for you guys i would have always believed that the 6 bolts were lighter seeing how the 1st gen "looks" smaller than the 2nd gens.....dsms have the tendency to make their bodies pretty wide...... ex 2-3-4 gens =/

The cost for me is is about $1400
That's starting from a bare block having a 6 bolt crank put in, eagle rods, 2g forged piston having my 2g front plate machined to fit a 1g block buying a new flywheel new oil filter housing, 1g CAS, balance shaft eliminator kit, and having valve job done on my 2g head.

so what you will not need is a new water pump or thermostat housing, and this means that pretty much everything on the front of your motor will work and you also don't need to get a new oil pan your 2g one will do. I think thats it if I'm missing any thing I will get back to you in a few.

$1400.00  i think my first mod should be a stand buy motor :D

My 6 bolt swap is looking to be in the 3k range. I found a company that has completely rebuilt 6 bolt longblock and everything I need (less the flywheel, clutch, and valve cover) for about 2k and another 1 k for A EVO 16G and miscellaneous parts. -Matt

so your paying an extra thousand for the 16g evo turbo

well if you get a JDM 6 bolt with yellow injectors and a 16g turbo it will cost around 1700.00 and another 1500.00 if you have a shop install it for you, assuming your not mechanically inclined. Otherwise, you can save yourself alot of money if you remove the old motor and do the install yourself. This is my plan for my Talon anyways...

slowboy racing sells the kits to do it if your were going that route. also check vfaq.com they'll explain the process. i would personally go with the 6 bolt bottom and maintain your 2g head. your going to need to machine the 2g head to accommodate the 1g flow precess that and the head studs are not a direct match but a little off. you need to trim a motor mount to also fit. but like i said it explains in all in vfaq.com and alittle in slowboyracing.com the price aspect really comes into play with the labor. find a good dsm guy on this site which happens to be in the area and make it a project. I'm doing this same thing in a month or so.

I recently got the block out of my car a 91 talon, and there are 7 bolts on the flywheel! does this mean I have a seven bolt engine? I went out of my way to get the year model that came with a six, because of crankwalk! can I change the crankshaft or something and make it a 6? I just dont want crankwalk, I cant belive this, it had a 1G head and a s16g turbo hooked up with no kit, I dont understand, please help!
