How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

Just wondering if anyone has done this swap and could tell me if want problems I would face if any. My 7 bolt 1g isn't getting compression and I can get my hands on a 91 6bolt. Will it fit?

THanks
Junior

There very little to do other than parts swapping. It's not like trying to bolt a 6-bolt in a 2G. You'll have to swap the flywheel, maybe the thermostat housing (depending on the donor motor or if it's a JDM) and you're good to go.

alright I have a few Q's

first one is
I bought a 1992 Gst i am planing on parting it out but was thinking about keeping the block build it and put it in my 2g. Is this motor out of the 1992 a 6bolt? how can i tell?

My goal is to be some where around low 12's 1/4mile time
So what im trying to figure out is should i do the 6bolt swap? or should i just rebuild my 7bolt that is already in my 95 Gst it hasn't walked and it has 139k would a 7bolt be able to hold that much ?? and if i was to do the 6bolt what all do i need ?

any info would help
thanks

Most people would recommend doing the 6 bolt. It the only true solution for the possibility of crankwalk.

With your goal of low 12's you would be fine on the 7 bolt, but crankwalk is always a possibility.

Some information on the 6 bolt swap can be found here..

what kind of history do you know about the 2G you have? the norm is, if it has been upgraded......... more specificly the pressure plate (that's a big contributer). and has 139k like you said..... you "should" be safe, if it is still stock then I personally wouldn't risk it......... have a 97 with a 6 bolt. Walked twice on me at 30 and 60k but I was always hard on it........ and it didn't stay stock for too long. so I put in the 6 and love it!!! so basicly if you don't know the history or it has been stock then I wouldn't really risk it....... if you know it has been modified and has no problem....... then go ahead and go for it........ but a 6 bolt swap is easy and most performance shops......... like to only deal in 6 bolts........ plus you have one, build it, then swap it, minimal down time.

yeah i dont' know much about the history of the car i pulled the vin and it has never been wrecked but i'm pretty sure it has stayed stock untill i got it
but most likly it was drivin hard before me so i'mm leaning more to do the 6bolt since i got it and all would be kinda stupid not to
I just don't know how good i will be with swiching the wires and stuff Im not even sure what all has to change
guess i gotta start readin

I have a 1993 Talon 2.0 non turbo with a blown engine and i have a 1991 Eclipse 2.0 Non turbo with a blown transmission. the 91 has a 6 bolt block and the 93 has a 7 bolt, does anything need to be modified to put the 6 bolt engine in the 93 for non turbo cars since they are both 1g's?

my friend wants me to put my old 1990 GST manual engine into his 1992 2.0NT automatic car. He has already stuck a lot of money into his car and wants a nice job. So a couple questions for you.

1. Will this work?

2. If it will work what are the parts i will need?

www.vfaq.com

you are doing 2 swaps here,
auto to manual swap, aswell as a T into NT swap, both are detailed in the faq pages.

Not to mention a few threads in this forum.

the 5 speed swap, isnt really that difficult, but labor and time entensive.

parts needed.
master cylnder
slave cylnder and lines.
5 speed tranny.
5 speed ecu.
shifter linkage and cables.

read the write up.

the 6 bolt swap is just part swaping, a little modifying of wires, and timing belt cover.

if you can follow directions and are moderatly technically enclined, you should be fine, but if changing your sparkplugs and wires or air filters and thinigs of that nature tax your ability. id advise locating a member in your area, or someone with general expertise.

because there is some needed drilling and cutting of firewall locations.
removal of the steering column.

LOL i know what I'm doing. I know all about the 4G63 and what it can do. I use to read up on it every day. The cops around my town were harassing me about my car. I finally gave up and parted it and bought a stock civic. I never read anything about putting a 4G63T into a NT. Its just the engine going in not the tranny with it.

I'm gonna be rebuilding my talon motor and its a seven bolt motor. its from a 93 and i want to put it in my 92 when done. but i don't no if the one in the 92 is a 6 bolt and what one would be better to use i plan to modify some.i have two engines one 93 the other 92 will the 93 block work with my 92 computer and ecu or is the 6 bolt block better

Before the oil pan method was identified, the only way to 'tell' if you had a 7-bolt engine was the production date of the car. According to the staff of Conicelli Mitsubishi, cars produced between March, 1989 and the third week of April, 1992 have 6-bolt motors; May, 1992 to the first week of May, 1994 have 7-bolt motors.

Another way might be to check the front brakes. 7-bolt engines are associated with big brakes; cars that have big brakes often have 7-bolt engines. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know if this method is reliable or not.

good info for ya

OK thanks. but what block would i be better off using to make hp. or will the 7 bolt not work with the 6 bolt trans.i have 2 manual trans .still gotta find out when my 92 was made i don't no if it is the older one or newer :tease:

All 90-94 transmissions will bolt onto any 90-94 engine. There are some internal differences in the trannys, but the case is the same.

As far as which block will make more power, in general the 6 bolt will. 6 bolt motors have stronger rods than the 7 bolt motors, but both motors should be able to support 400hp with proper tuning. Hope this helps you out.

ok i give up on searchin its a simple and stupid question. is my 91 eclipse gsx a 6 bolt or 7 bolt. its a 7 bolt right thanks and sorry for wasting your time
