How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

WHOA!!! DO NOT TORQUE THOSE DOWN.

Tighten them down so they are snug and you will be good to go. :thumb:

But if you must the torque specs are around 2-3 ft lbs

I got a block from my buddy who has a shop and assembled was crank, rods, pistons, ps pump and a few other things. I am only contomplating this because the crank has 7 bolts which is a 7 bolt but the reason i am pondering 6 bolt is because the ps pump is diven by a v-belt which is driven by another pully and then to the main pully which my 97' the ps pump is a serpintene belt. but im just asking because one of you will give me a quick answer thanks.

i dont have the pan but on so on the block the flange or surface that the pan sits on will be flat on a 6 bolt and on the 7 bolt it will drop down or have a dip in it. thanks i havent ever really worked on a 6 bolt motor.

If the flywheel side of the crank has 6 bolts, its a 6 bolt. If it has 7 bolts, it is a seven bolt. :thumb:

I realize this but to my understanding the power steering belt on the 7 bolts are serpenten belts not v-belts like this block i have.

i looked at it its a 7 bolt but i didnt know that any 7 bolts use a v-belt for the ps pump

does the early 7 bolt have a v-belt instead of a serpentine belt like my 97' has

My 7 bolt 99 GST has no serpentine belts, just v-belts.

At any rate, the number of crank/flywheel bolts (rather than what type of drive belt it's using) has determined that it's a 7 bolt block LOL

What kind of power steering pump you have does not denote whether or not you have a 7 bolt or 6 bolt. They call it a "7 bolt" and "6 bolt" because of the # of bolts you have on the crank (LOL). I think the power steering pumps are interchangable anyways.

this is a 2g 96 talon the ps belt is a serpentine not a v-belt same as my 97 eclipse the 99 should have a serpentine belt if its got the stock motor the block i have has either a 7 bolt crank or a 6 bolt pump on it right. i need to look at the pan yet
thanks for all the posts.

i guess more than likely with out me going to the shed to check the oil pan im sure its a 7 bolt but the ps pump all looks different on mine.

im listening but i just want to make sure what i got cuz im going to be spending big bucks on it and do a full build. ill just look at the pan flange tonight. thanks for your help

Just look at the two exhaust manifold bolts on the very end. They are bigger then the rest, If not they will be the same size as the rest.. That can tell you also.

It depends what gen the 7 bolt is out of. A 1st gen 7 bolt will have the same head design in terms of bolt pattern as the 6 bolts, and the power steering belt will be a V belt on a 1st gen 7 bolt as well.

hey
ive been doing some looking at cant find the awnsers im lookin for i just want a strait up awnser no if you do this or that or what not i just want to know if there the same or not.
ok 1st are a 1g 7 bolt block and a 2g 7 bolt block the same or can they be switched with out makin any changes.
2nd is a 2g turbo 7 bolt block the sames as a 2g 7 bolt n/t block and the same with a 1g assuming all that were talking about is the 4g63 i dont care about the 420a LOL
thanks for your help
Gunner

No the non-turbo blocks are not the same. They have higher compression pistons, no oil squirters.. etc.. etc... there are no n/t 2g blocks, that is what a 420a is
