How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

Can someone else also verify this ?
Guys here are telling that in the 7bolt engine cylinder head the intake "duct" (if that's the right word for it) would be smaller.

All 1G heads are the same casting regardless of 6 or 7 bolt. Some would say that the 2G head would be better for an all out race motor, in stock form the 2G head has smaller intake ports but a better, more direct shot for the fuel/air mix to go through the valves. Most would say the best head would be a ported 2G head. Check out www.ffwdconnection.com, their top of the line race head is actually a 2G core.

I've got a 94 talon tsi (fwd) Now, Normally I would say this is a 7bolt, BUT The guy i bought the car from said its on its second engine, i don't know if its on its 2nd tranny. How do i find out if its the 6 or 7 bolt? Or do i just wait til i go to slowboy next time and look like a dumbass and ask them?

thank you! I didn't even think about checking the faqs coz it seemed like adumb question, since most everyone just knows by the year. thanks guys!

Just figured that I would ask this question. Since I MIGHT be needing a new bottom end. Will find that out later today. Reason I ask is I can get a stock 6 Bolt shortblock for a really good price. Now I know people say over and over again that the 1G head is wayy better then the 2G stock head.. but I am not lookin to make super power. I already have a 1G CAS wired into my car so that shouldn't be a problem. Any other issues? TIA guys

i think my 7 bolt is about to go so im gonna buy my cuzins 94 gsx with a built motor in it. My plans are to switch over the motor to my 2g but he dont remember if they build the 7bolt up or if they build up a 6 bolt. My question is Is there anyway to see if its a 6 bolt engine by looking at the block from the outside. Thanks

Hey guys, I was just wondering since I already have my motor apart should I buy a 6 bolt shortblock to eliminate (or extremely lower) my chances of getting crankwalk.
Does the head from a 97 just bolt right up to it?
What about transmition?
What modifications are necessary to successfully complete this conversion?

The transmission will bolt right up. The head will bolt right up too but the bolt holes need to be bored out slightly. Other modifications include the wiring of the 1g cas. (Find more here)

Other than that, you should be good. And don't forget that if you have any questions, ask them. Its better to ask a question and do it right than to do something wrong and look stupid. Good luck on the swap!

i have a 92 turbo laser. how do i tell if i have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt motor? I need a new head and want to know what i have. I found on thats ported and polished but dont know if its a 6 or 7 or even what mine is. Im new to this and would like to get my car running asap. Thanks for the help in advance. Cody

Well if you have a 92, the 1g 6 and 7 bolts both use the same head. In 95 they started changing to the smaller port heads. But you can tell by the corner manifold nut, headstuds 6 bolt are 12mm, 7 bolts are 11mm. Your oil pan, and flywheel bolts.

This may be a dumb question to some but it has been bothering me for some time. I am planning a 6 bolt swap into my 95' gsx this summer but I am curious as to what parts you then buy for your car. Obviously you buy 6bolt internal like rods etc.. but what do you buy for ic piping etc. How compatible are parts like injectors, heads, etc.. I'm sure I could search this forum for days and get all my answears but this way someone else has something to do like explain this to me when they are bored. I'm just curious how 7bolt to 6bolts parts are compatible. And if there is a thread about this that has been going on for some time just post the link. I will sleep better at night once this question no longer bothers me. LOL :thumb:

Hey thanks I appreciate it. However I am still curious as to what aftermarket parts to buy. Do I buy parts for a 2g or a 1g like intake, ic piping, etc... Do I buy the parts based on the motor im using or on the shape of the engine bay and body. I might be wording my thoughts wrong. sorry. :|

and if it 's a 99% street driven daily commuter car you may consider using the 2g head and doing the so called "block only" swap.

I just got done with mine last week and the car looks bone stock... everyone is disappointed when they pop the hood and there is nothing to see except that it is clean. ROFL

you will need everything 1g from the pan to the head, and from the rear seal plate to the plastic covers, drill out the 2g head to fit ARP studs... and reuse your 2g thermostat housing and water piping and water/oil cooler on a 1g stand. IF you want the straight bolton way then you can use a 1g thermostat housing, neck, and water pipe. I had the 1g thermostat housing and neck brand new but chose not to use them
you also need a black top cas.

Best of luck to you! If you have any questions PM me.

I just bought a 1g 6bolt bottom end with everything in it now i need to know what do i need to buy and what needs to be taken out of my 2g. Besides the new cltuch, and oilpan what else needs to be changed for me to do this convertion. Also what about my crank sensor is it the same? please can someone help me on this steps on how to do it??? thanks.

You should really do a search on this. There's about a million threads on it. There's one by hellotbone which I like because it has a lot of pictures and it's pretty well written. Search button.
