when i bought my gst they previous owner told me that its a rebuilt engine and that it was from japan, the engine from japan are the 6 bolt right ? how would i check on my car what type of engine i have?

No it could be either. I have a 7 Bolt from Japan.

The best way to tell is with the transmission off and count the flywheel bolts, second best (and easiest) is to check the oil pan.

How to quickly tell a 6bolt and 7bolt engine apart

Things to take note having a "JDM" this may or may not apply to your engine.

Power steering bracket is different and the stock p/s belt will not fit
Different harmonic damper
Slightly different water line placement
May have a different intake and throttle body
-Different fuel injectors
-Different turbo (14b or 16G)

6 bolts were in dsms up to half way through the '92 production year. Any engine produced after that time was a 7 bolt. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe the only 6 bolt engines that came from Japan were out of the early Lancer Evolutions.

Lancers and galants I'm pretty sure..

Also some 92.5-93 were ordered with the 6 bolts..But you won't find many like that..Which is why you should just assume 92.5 and later were all 7 bolts..

Front end of a 7 bolt motor

See how the lip of the pan curves under the front sprocket so the balance belt can be removed without removing that sprocket.

With this curve, the front of the pan had to get the fold to compensate for the curve of the lower block.

from looking at your timing belt I would say it is a 7 bolt
I have a 6 bolt and my timing belt configuration is differen than the pic

Hmmm. I would say his engine is a 7 bolt because he says it is....

Lancer Evo started in 92. Galant VR-4 had 6 bolts though...

The person that posted the pic wasn't asking what engine that was, they were using it as a reference as to what a 7 bolt looks like.
