Hey guys i am picking up a GST and need to know how to tell the difference between a 6 bolt and a 7 bolt with out droping the tranny. Some one said the oil pans but i dont know what to look for. A friend (DSM Guru pretty much) said he thinks its a 6 Bolt but it was night time and it was hard to see. He also said the Valve cover is JDM and could mean the engine is. The valve cover has Mitsubishi and the mitsubishi symbol on top and DOHC 16valve on bottom. Ill post a pic of both as soon as i can. But in the mean time can some one send me a pic of a 6 bolt oil pan and 7 bolt oil pan?

look at where the Transmission bellhousing meets the BLOCK right in the front (under shifter cables, next to slave cylinder, by the crossmember). If the "shape" of the block, matches the 2G tranny perfectly...Then it's a 7-bolt. If the shape of the block is skinny there, and doesnt match the Tranny, with a bolt that doesnt go into the block, it's a 6-bolt.

or you can check the oil pan on the back side of it((the side opposite the drian plug), if it is flat its a 6 bolt but if it dips in it is a 7, but they did the switch over from the 6 to the 7 in mid to late 92 so you might get lucky

Ok so look for a skinny block for a 6 bolt? il do that tomorrow.

the oil pan is flat on the opposite side of the drain plug i belive. But if its a 7 bolt im just gonna get a Eagle Crankshaft with bigger oil feeds to prevent crank walk cause im buildin this car for drag to shut a V-8 punk up. he Hates every import known to man even though my N/A eclipse GS (was gonna be boosted till he opened his mouth so im bringing out the big guns) at his 94 GT with the 5.0 by a car lenth. he says he has a 10 sec S-10. But i hope its a 6 bolt.

And ghost thx for the link judgeing from the bottom of the link i have a 6 bolt cause mine bumps out toward the driver side. But if it is it has more power than a stock 6 bolt it has a 2nd gen head and stuff but can pull up to 135mph in 5th gear in no time and has plenty of room to go higher maybe up to 150mph but come to think of it it does have a slight lope at idle so it may be cammed.

The 6bolt has the cas (round casing on the intake camshaft) on the left side of the valve cover. 7 bolt doesnt/QUOTE]

The 2gb motors have the CAS on the tranny side of the intake cam as well. However the easiest way Ive been able to tell is the 2g 7 bolts the cam side motor mount just goes straight to the mount location and the 1g 6 bolt the motor mount kind of wraps around the front of the engine. Im not to positive on the 2gs with a 6 bolt swap however.. Hope this helps

just look at where the block meets the bellhousing, very simple.

Or

Look where the coolant feed for the turbo is, if it comes from the front of the block via coolant galley, its a 7-bolt

Ok i did the oil pan test from Vfaqs and the tranny test that eclipicalGS said do and it is a 6 bolt with a 7 bolt Head. So now im gonna get the shell i found in texas as soon as i get the cash.

MMM never knew that.. Learn something new ever day :applause:

Its a 7 bolt head on a 6 bolt block so im good i got the better flowing head and the stroger block.
