Have a 93 Eagle talon TSI front wheel drive turbo car that has 5 speed trans I just replaced, at first the bracket had quite a bit of play in it. Snatched bracket off of my old trans and put on this one and now goes through 1-4 excellent but 5th grinds everytime I go in no matter rpms or speed even at stand still and took me good 20 mins to get reverse to engage, almost like it isn't there always end up in 4th instead. Do you believe adjusting my shifter cables could fix this issue or internal issues?

First, what oil are you using?
Is your clutch adjusted properly?

What condition what this swapped transmission?

Actually... I know what this sounds like.

What year is the new transmission?

I have extended the throw arm on my clutch pedal assembly and lengthened the push rod on slave cylinder, bled it properly and running MT90 Redline fluid. Not sure of year on trans haven't coded it out to see what it came out of. I also want to add car has a short shifter and aftermarket clutch with barbaric pressure, center differential came out of old transmission and locked it solid so swapped to this transmission, was a good running trans purchased from a friend.

Well... What I'm wondering is if you picked up a 90 Transmission. I know that when I was dealing with a 92 Trans in a 90, if the bracket isn't adjusted correctly then you will either have 3-4-5-R but no 1 or 2. Now the other way around it's like your issue and there's no 5th or Reverse.

I adjusted my shift linkage on selector cable and can now get to 1-4 and reverse but 5 still grinds every shift no matter what speed/rpm you are at, synchros going bad?

Keep playing with adjustment before you give up on a gear. Sometimes you just have to get it perfect.

A good way to test your synchros, specifically 5th gear in this case :

Turn your car on and don't press the clutch. Slowly ease your shifter in towards 5th with the clutch still out. If the engine begins to bog lightly as you get close to the gear, then your synchro is good. If it goes right into the gear and just starts grinding without any resistance or engine bog then you have a bad synchro.

In that case I am sure I have bad synchro, I can shift to neutral and just moving shifter side to side in neutral if I get too close to 5th it grinds just from that... grr time for a new trans. Time to start a new thread for trans builders ^_^ thanks for all the help fellas much obliged .

Well now car shifts fine into all gears except 3rd and 5th they grind just about every time unless I have rpms just perfect. Now it is really time for a new tranny ... may just sell car and find the AWD i have been wishing for. :)
