I was driving back home then all of the sudden i couldn't shift to 2, 4 and reverse but i can shift to 1, 3 and 5. Every time i tried to shift to 2, 4 and reverse it just slides back to neutral it wont lock to those shifts but when i have the car off it does lock on to 2, 4 and reverse except when i turn on the car. Is it the transmission bad? or the clutch?

Typically, that is either a shift cable, shift cable retainer clip or something contacting the shift lever by the transmission.

First check if your shift cable outer casings at the tranny are bolted on solid (won't move) while someone shifts for you. The bracket may be loose/missing. Also make sure the shift lever is being pushed all the way forward and not hitting the lower radiator hose. And the cable isn't frayed/damaged.
Another possibility is your shift lever shoe has worn down: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/97-gs-t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.376341/#post-152266167.

The only mout point for the cable is right above the transmission there are two bolts that fall out all the time. That would be the first place I'd look. Located on the left side of motor kind of buried.(like everything else in our engine bay haha) the parts stores usually have a assorted container of common metric bolt and nut sizes in 8 grade for around eight bucks. It is an awesome thing to keep around to just replace old hardware as you come across it. While yyou're in there make sure nothing is pushing on the cables. if I remember correctly the wire harness moves around near the linkage make sure nothing is pressing on it. Look for wear marks or clean spots from rubbing surfaces.
Good luck

I had this problem about a month ago. My car would shift into 1, 3, and 5 fine but when I went to go into 2,4, or reverse, it felt like I was hitting a wall and just wouldn't go into gear. I took the car in and they said my clutch was completely shot and even the guys at the shop were confused about why a bad clutch made it do that. But I had the master and slave changed along with the clutch and I've never had any problems since.

Hopefully it's the same problem as mine

My brother had this problem in his last mustang and the sychronizers had gone out in it...beats me, that's just what the Mechanic told us LOL but they changed them, did nothing to the clutch slave or master and everything was peachy! ...aside from it being a Ford!

I had that same thing a number months ago. Trying to put into 2, 4 and reverse was like hitting a wall. I checked all the cables, etc, I even dissconnected them from the transmission and tried the shift levers directly and found the same thing. I drove it around like that for a while as I looked for a rebuild on hand from one of our rebuilders. All of a sudden I lost 1, 3 and 5! It was like the shift lever had no cables connected to it. I got the car flatbeded to Josh at JNZtunning, so he could swap it out. When he opened it, he told me that a roll pin fell out from somewhere (I forget where) and magically got snagged on a magnet.
