why dont you use the foam brush that is mentioned in the original mopar thread...i think that would be a lot better than spray canning it after youve spent all that time rolling and sanding the rest of the car...

I have the foam brushes but thye dont lay even its blotchy...so I know I can make it work with the can. Im not worried about that..that being said, I just got done wetsanding and applying the 3rd coat and its gotten alot darker I will have full coverage with in 2 more coats.
 
well im not a big fan of rolling paint on cars. but the best way to do it is to not us a D.A on it. i would recomend using a block to sand the whole car then after sandin with 220 use fine scotch brite(grey) and wet sand it. also i would use a wax and grease remover(dx330 works best.) do not use on plastic though or fiber glass. oh and when u prep the car u dont have to go to metal just make sure there are no shinny spots when u are done sanding.

I'm not either and at first I was thinking this was really getto. But then I needed to paint my hood and this was the most cost effective route to go. I have the spray eq. to do it the right way but am busy with work so instead of having to take several days to mask off my garage, clean up everything, setup everything and do it the right way I said what the hell and for less than $30 I have a nice presentable hood. Also with this I was able to see and correct flaws in my bodywork (still a novice at this)and fix without worry of having to redue the entire paint job. And after wetsanding and buffing I can hardly tell the difference between it and the factory paint. Also I did'nt piss off my tree hugging neihbor by spraying.:shhh:
 
EclipseTrbo420A... keep up the good work and keep the updates coming! I'm VERY excited to see the progression of this project.

BTW... how long do you estimate each coat takes you to apply it? I'm just curious. I'm thinking that when the weather warms up that I'll be painting my front bumper to (hopefully) match the rest of my car. Right now it's an unpainted 2gb bumper.
 
They also make spray cans when im done..what ever white is left im just goin gto hit it with a covering mist and then take car of the fine detailing after like buffing and polish..wax yada yada..

Why not give those areas a light dusting with the spray can in between coats so that you can sand those areas with the rest of the car?

Thanks man, I can roll the whole car in a half an hour to an hour easy with my premixed jug and as for everone saying wet sanding takes forever...yes, but Im not going to wet sand the parts like te door jambs and the side where the side skirts cover. besides the way Im applying the paint its going on damn smooth as it is. I gotta eat and then head down and apply the 4th coat..I had the car and bumper out in the sun today.

I can spray steady enough to make the jambs and inner and outer frame pieces look great. More pics tonight after the 4th coat is on..I have to mix some more paint so Ill see id I can get some ratio number for you guys.
 
Im going to wet sand today, the car is pretty much black now but should show some white after this sanding. Then 2 more coats..Ill grab some pcis tonight.
 
Seriously, this looks awesome, I think I might give this a try. What about the door jams and engine bay, and things like that, are you just using a spray can for that kinda stuff?
 
I worked at a True Value hardware store quite a few years ago, and I seem to remember that you could get X-O Rust enamel mixed to any color you want. They have a Tint Base that you start with. So, that means you could get the $52 paint job in just about any color you want :) I might have to try this on a spare fender, and see how it turns out too.
 
Update Update Update! Please! I really want to see how this turns out so I can start on my car.
 
Heres the pics from today...I thinned the paint out even more this morning and it went on alot smoother, I think even I had to to thick, but its better now. That being said I have to sand down the rear bumper and the skirts and re-do them...I applied WAY to much the first 5 or 6 coats I did. Sucks but I want it to look good...I should go do it now but its too nice out. Anyway heres the pics...

That actually looks kinda cool. It seems to have like a smoke effect of some sort. I would actually keep it like that :rocks:
 
Ive read through all this but I was thinking even wet sanding with 600 grid sandpaper isnt it pretty course? Its like scratching it sharp rocks. Is this right? Isnt the higher the number the more fine it is? Starting from 2000 down? The guy that did the mopar starts with 80 grid thats rough. Im not sure though correct me if im wrong.
 
yes the higher the number the smoother it is. THe reason why you start low is to get it all rough, then gradually make it smooth the higher you go.
 
I wet sanded tonight for about 2 hours...and Im still not done. My arms about to fall off, but I got the paint smooth like glass. When its wet it looks like any other professional black paint job. I went over the car thoroughly with 600.

I gotta get to bed for call in the morning, but tomorrow right when I get home Ill grap the pics and show the progress for sure.

I'm especially interested in seeing how it progresses from coat to coat, and also how it compares (subjectively) to factory/new paint. I'm not expecting a really deep clearcoat/pearl/metallic type paint. But what is realistic to expect from this?

This is exciting, as paint is usually so out of reach for weekend garage-types like me.

The paint on my talon is shot right now too. Finally moved out and have my own garage now :rocks::rocks: I'll be trying this over the winter to see how it works out as well!
 
The first 2 are after 4 coats and wer sanded with 600 and the last three are the fifth coat right after application.

I applied the 6th yesterday and am goin to go wetsand the entire car with 800 now...:cry:

Ill grab some more pics tonight after the wetsand and 7th coat.
