Hi, I'm posting because I'm concerned about my friend's new setup, and whether or not it will make it until spring for a trip to the strip.

He drives a '99 GS-T and is just about to drop in his new engine/turbo setup, but has no intention to aquire engine management, fuel upgrades, or a larger intercooler for that matter. I think he's just assuming this combo will fire right up and run great at 15 or 16psi. The new setup uses: a junkyard 4g64 that he has had bored .020 over, H Beam rods, 9.2:1 pistons, and he's having the engine shop use his 2G turbo head (he does know there are ports to be capped etc...) He'll also be running the EIII-16G that he bought just before his last engine was in it's final moments (this will be engine #3, you can see why I'm concerned.) He's using those rods because he intends to make bigger power someday, and he does know that he'll need a front mount, pump, injectors, management etc... ASAP, but for the time being plans on running the 15 or 16lbs and getting by till he gets more money.

I don't want to be too harsh on him if he's actually going to be fine with what he intends to do here, so I'm curious what everyone else with these mods is running as far as intercooler, engine management, and fuel mods. I know in every other car community I frequent, you do not just add displacement and a big-ish turbo without management, fuel mods, and a front mount. What about in this case?

Thanks for any help. :)

If your friend doesnt want to listen, then there is really nothing you can do. There is a reason why he is on engine #3 and my theory is that your friend has no business modding his car if he isnt going to do it right. If he doesnt have enough sense to get some fuel management, then just let him blow up his car again and then see what he does.

Im sorry if I sound harsh but it just aggrivates me when I see things like this. Someone puts thousands upon thousands of dollars into their car and they do it half-ass and wonder why it blows up. Just tell your friend to do himself a favor and call up slowboy or buschur or anywhere else and tell them what he plans on doing and let them tell him what he SHOULD be doing. That is pretty much all you can do if hes a hardhead.

When I first bought my car I had no fuel management or fuel upgrades. Buschur Racing worked on it and both Dan and Dave informed me that I would be more than safe at 15 psi on a Big16G with stock injectors and pump. Upgrading the pump allowed me to run 17psi with zero knock and a 190 with 550's allows me to run 26psi on pump gas with 3 counts of knock and moderate timing (19 degrees).

The issue above is the compression ratio. Based on that, I wouldn't run more than 13-14psi on it after break-in. A sound idea would be to allow the wastegate to open fully (disconnect the arm and let it hang) and build zero boost until the motor breaks in properly. The larger issue is that a logger is needed to at least verify the presence of any knock. That alone will tell how much boost can be run on stock fuel with 9.2:1 compression. Convince him of a proper break in and the purchase of a logger and this motor should survive if proper tuning guidelines are followed.

Hope that helps,

Andy

this friend he is posting about is me. The second motor is still good in case you are wondering....flywheel just came off. So I decided to build up the 2.4 4g64. First motor only blew because the wastegate line came off and I didnt know it. ooops. Anyways I know what Im doing as far as modding. I ran 15-17 psi on my 2.0 and on my 93 talon tsi with no problems ever. The pistons on my motor that came out are perfectly fine. Im not saying i was going to run that on this motor. If I were to get just a fuel pump for now, will i need any tuning. Am I going to be running to rich? Also what size injectors should I go with. I have read that 550's might be too small. Thanks for the info and I am ready to have my car back!

PS. Fuel pump is on its way via bootbox! Thanks!!

EVO III's will be fine with a 190 and 650's. You could run on 550's, but it's better to have more headroom and lower IDC's instead of maxing out a smaller injector. If you run the 190 with no injector upgrades, the overrun on the stock fuel pressure regulator is so mild as to not require an aftermarket AFPR and it will give a couple of extra boost psi. It'll be a good start and you can add the injectors and fuel control when your time and budget allow. Good luck with your buildup and don't forget proper break-in and a logger.

yeah the engine will probably creat some more hp but with out supporting mods or any kind of tuning device it wont creat any power near what he is expecting it to be. your mods arent anything unlessyou can tune them and there supporting mods.

No Management System? Injectors? Pump? Hahaha, can anyone say FUEL CUT. How retarded. Tell him to buy himself a helmet cause his head is going to be hitting the steering wheel.

As far as front mounts are concerned you DONT really NEED one, but I think the fact he is changing his turbo he is going to at least want some sort of management system (S-AFC), a pump, and injectors. Its seriously going to run like ass if he doesn't do the supporting mods..it could potentially run slower than before, the computer is simply not optimized for a bigger turbo.

Wow with nothing to tune it with? I would really step in and tell your freind whats up, hes going to end up blowing somthing up.

HAHA! that is what I was going to comment on. Who knows? maybe you won't get fuel cut. But picking your teeth from the steering wheel would make anyone think twice about running a stroker setup w/ overstock boost and no fuel management. . .

Why do you need to drive your car without upgrading injectors and getting the fuel control needed to do it succesfully. Just a used set of Turbo RX7 550s and a used SAFC is a decent start. and I bet you can get them all for $200. Are you that tight now on cash? Why don't you wait? It might be better that you wait being that you've put alot of time and money in your engine as is with a stroked crank.

Did you get the EVO3 to go with your stroker setup or did you already have that turbo? Teh good thing about a stroker is that you get less lag with much bigger turbos. A 50trim that costs about $200 more will take you well beyond an evo3 and will spool like an evo3 with the small 2.0 displacement. Just wondering:confused: . What are your ultimate goals? SBRs stroker that put down 400whp with an evo3 16g? (it shows that it is possible with an evo3 but not probable. You don't have a set of cams yet.)
