running 16g without engine management

To really know what's going on in your car, you should ideally have at least a logger and logging software, as well as a WBO2 sensor/gauge. But yes, many many DSM'ers run a 16g with a simple boost gauge, boost controller, and the necessary upgraded fuel components with fairly good results.

I do it, just keep the boost low. Upgrading your fuel pump isn't a bad idea though. It will not be a huge night and day difference at stock boost levels but if you turn it up a bit the difference between the t25 and the 16g at 15psi is pretty noticeable.

You can do it with a wideband. Just keep it safe with boost levels and watch the a/f. Im running 510s on stock pump and im pushing 18lb's with a 11.8 a/f. till alittle rich and im about to be using a maft to tune it alittle better. I was runnng super rich at 15lbs with those bigger injectors untuned. Like 9.5:1 so rich it would cut out.

On a turbo model DSM, sure. But on a N/T DSM it may be a lot different because the car does not have a turbo from the factory thus making the fuel pressure regulator a non rising unit. For a boosted application you need a fuel pressure regulator that is going to raise fuel pressure with each pound of boost.

If you are looking into boosting a N/T DSM, go ahead and take a look at Hahn's product page for a non turbo Eclipse.

Or something like this turbo kit from Slow Boy Racing.

Hope this helps you out :thumb:

Good catch. I didn't notice the OP had a N/T DSM. In which case, no, simply putting a 16g on a non-turbo DSM would be a bad idea.

oh no i have a turbo awd. no non turbo. and im getting full turbo back exhaust and ported manifold along with the turbo. so i have most of the components. im going to do a fuel pump im sure. ive been told the stock injecters can handle the 16g fine if not boosting super high. and i will be getting engine management after i get the money. i know plenty of guys running the 16g with no e-man and runs great. so im wondering with those mods listed how much boost can i run safely for daily driver and how much for accosional racing?

Only your datalogger can tell you that for sure. "Safe" boost on a well-maintained DSM should be right around 12psi. Then you can use a WBO2 and a datalogger to adjust it from there.

ive been running a 16 g with no real fuel mods at 15 psi and havent had any problems... sometimes when it is really cold out i hit fuel cut but I just shift a little sooner and still have plenty of power.

i've been running the b16g for 8 months now and never had a problem not even fuel cut. boosting at 15 psi and runs pretty strong without any engine management. i've put in 190 fuel pump with stock injector. still pig rich... i was running stock boost for a while and it just doesn't pull as hard as at 15 psi.....big difference.....stock boost at 10 psi......ready to tune soon though with safc......i think you should be good without any mod with the 16g.....but the pump does help....

From my experience with an EVO III 16G don't go over 12lbs of boost without an engine management system.

Exactly. I don't know how many times I've said this, since the the turbo is bigger, it will be flowing more CFM then any stock DSM turbo EVEN if they are set to the same PSI. This added air then makes the air/fuel ratio lean and that is never good when in boost. Now, a stock fuel map is very rich for our cars. So 12lbs isn't going to force it to go deadly lean. It actually probably brings it right around 11:1 (plus or minus). But if you or anyone for that matter wants to raise their boost above the stock amount, just get something to let you monitor what's going on with the o2 volts. Or better yet, wideband and knock. Saves time and possibly a hole in piston or 2.
