Well guys ever since I started looking for info on this forum, I've noticed that MANY 4g63 owners have reliability issues, including normal expected issues, and out of the ordinary issues. Yes I know that a 4g63 is by far a better platform to begin with, but I'm not talking about performance here, I'm talking about reliability. I've had my talon for 4 months with no problems , except minor problems that I have caused myself. A couple minutes ago I read a thread where a guy replied "I've been through a lot of similar situations like that with my old 95 GST. Lost 2 jobs thanks to that monster once the engine went, the other the whole wiring caught on fire". I mean come on loosing 2 jobs because of the damn 4g63. That just bugs me, but I would like to here some opinions. Will the 420a ever be dominant over the 4g63, even without the awd, lets compare it to a Gst. Attack me if you must but I feel in a way I'am right.

Im a noob and still learning about these cars. Taking it one step at a time and learning from the guys here that know there sh**. I personally love my 420A but Ive had major issues with it timing belt, water pump, radiator hoses explode, control arms (all have been fixed and she drives perfect) and almost sold it a few times until I took a look at her after a wax.:D The reliability all depends on if the person before u took care of the car and if you take care of it. If you push your car on a daily basis then something is gonna happen and usually something not good. Its all on the luck of the draw

Fail XD

420A is the "I cant afford a 4G63 so I'm going to get the next best thing"

around here its known as the Ricer's DSM

A dsm is a dsm no matter how much power it puts now especially if its tastefully modded.

Never had a 4G63, but I bought my 420 from someone who obviously didn't maintain it. it was spray painted black, leaked oil from everywhere, one of the fans in it didn't even fit the car, it looked like it was just thrown in there, yet, after I fixed the oil leaks, I have NEVER had a problem with the motor. I've had to replace the tranny 3 times, but this thread is about the motor. And my car has almost 200k miles, bone stock.

Reliability---Power/Speed---Cheap/Low Cost

pick two because those are the things that make up and engine build.

if its reliable and fast, it wont be cheap. if its reliable and cheap it wont be fast. if its cheap and fast it wont be reliable.

*note* i seen somone already posted this... but read it again anyway*note*

i have a 420a that can spank lightly-mildly modded 4g63's (fwd mild. FWD and AWD light).
is it reliable? hell yeah. why? because it was done right, with good parts, and i don't drive the crap out of it just because i can.

both engines have their ups and downs. but if you're looking for a DD a 420a eclipse/talon will most likely be more reliable. why? because owners of the n/t generally know they have a slower car and didn't drive the crap out of it, where i personally have never seen a turbo eclipse/talon that at some time didn't have an owner that beat the crap out of it. sure there is one somewhere, put good luck finding it, and be prepared to pay out of your nose for it.

my 4g67 is rock solid, minus the 3 days it didnt want to start. damn cheap gas.

From My experience I can tell you I owned both. My first car was a Neon R/T(420a) a little bit different configuration than in the eclipse n/a. (Intake and exhaust were switched) But from my understanding same 420a block. My Grandmother, yes my grandmother owned this car. It had 55,000 miles on it when I bought it from her. Maintenance and regular oil changed were always taken care of. When I bought it, the car would burn oil so bad. I mean I was probably a little harder on it than my grandmother, but I always let it warm up and did oil changes at 3k. Because the car was burning so much oil I sold it for 3K, after getting into a wreck and fixing it.:D

I then bought my Eagle Talon with 100,000 miles on it. I sort of took a gamble on it, but it does not burn any oil at all, and really have not had any problems with the "engine itself."

I believe the 4G63 engine gets a bad wrap sometimes is from previous owners and poor maintenance. Alot of people will put a boost controller on their car when they buy first them and blow it up with out taking the proper precautions to run high boost.
