Ok, cars a 1996 eagle talon esi, 420a 234xxx miles. cold air intake, apexi exhaust, msd coil pack and wires, ngk iridium plugs.
my car would not start, it would crank for hours on end almost and get nowhere. no spark and no gas!!! WTF?!?!?! well about 3 days of sitting in the back yard it finally started! wooohoo... or so i thought. the idle was at a steady 2200 rpms and would not go down no matter what. so i used an obd2 machine on it, said map sensor failure... replaced the sensor. STILL DIDNT FIX IT! so i plugged the obd2 back in, now all of a sudden its saying throttle position sensor?? so i went and replaced that! STILL DID NOT HELP A THING, infact it jumped the rpms up to about 3200?!?!?! so i gave it some gas thinking maybe its just gotta warm up. well intake backfired sounded like a damn gun. now the car is making a really and i mean really high pitch sound from somewhere near the intake manifold AND STILL IS IDLING AT HIGH RPMS!!!!! could someone please help me with this??? i love the car to death, by far one of the best cars i have ever owned but if its something major i will be forced to get rid of her :[....

i know youll all knock me about the 420 a, its really all i can afford right now...

1. i definitely agree with the vacuum leak idea. sounds like a deginite place to start. i would try spraying brake clean or carb clean around the intake till something changes and when it does you probably found your leak.

2. you could burn a hole in your piston if you run plugs that are too hot without enough fuel to burn.

3. i could be wrong and im not trying to be arrogant but i have never heard of an ecu of any kind making noise of any kind when its on its way out. i always thought they just smoked and stuff....

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

actually now that i read your thread closer you said you replaced the tps and it idled higher? i would replace the throttle body gasket. for 5 bucks you cant really go wrong and im willing to bet its a good chance it will fix it.

im sorry. i dont mean to blow up this thread but i just wanted to say one more thing about this. hey man i had a 98 420a and that was the most reliable car i ever owned. i beat it to hell and back and all i ever replaced was the timing belt brakes and ball joints! took that car everywhere too. it was better than a dog! so dont be ashamed of your n/t dsm. be good to it and it will be good to you!

^^^ this guy above me is right. as frustrated as i get with the little issues of my 420a it has been pretty reliable for me over the past 2 years. I've done the same, the ball joints, timing belt, brakes, its been pretty good, only bad thing though is the timing belt went out on the highway so i had to rebuild the top end water pump went out with timing belt too, but other than that misfortune its been good. Hope i didnt speak to soon and end up stuck on the highway tomorrow.

I too had the same problem a few months back.
I had a vacuum leak. So I would check that if you haven't yet.

Good luck.

Idle makes me think the possibility of the IAC, however I don't see that contributing to the no start. A no start with rough/weird idle makes me lean towards either the CAS or CPS.

I think the no spark, no gas is the real issue, well apperntly it must come and go, since you got it to run and idle.

So have you checked cam/crank sensors? ( I do not know the 420A eletical package well)

But something is not sending an input to the ecu if there is no gas or spark

If you have a high idle then air is somehow getting into the intake system. Here is how I always check for vac leaks. Remove the intake pipe and put you hand over the throttle body. The car should die immediately. If it continues to run or doesn't die immediately you have a vac leak. If there are no vac leaks and still have high idle the air is either going around the IAC or through the throttle plate. You will have to do some investigating to figure out which it is.

MSD coil packs on the 420a are known to fail, they are also known to lower your HP by 1-2 aswell. Check your timing, with a backfire like that points to the timing being off.

Really? Can you back this up by dyno evidence? 1 - 2 HP is huge! WTF

Stock coils are fine, there are a few a guys running stock coils above 20 psi with out spark issues. You can also look into Granatelli - I run one currently and have not had problems for the past 10K miles.

Look it up for you self if you want to say some one needs to back it up.
Neons.org will help you with that!

I personally had gone through 3 MSD coil packs on my neon, aswell as two other friends failing two different times. We went back to stock coil packs with no problems. See if it is getting hot after driving around for a bit.

Slow yourself down there a little. If you really want to back it up......oh wait, I did!

Had problems on the dyno with blowing out spark at 24lbs (it was around 500whp, I forget the exact number). So I went from the stock coil to a MSD right on the dyno and low and behold, I came out with the exact same whp and, more importantly, I blew out spark right at 24lbs.

Classifying a 1 to 2whp difference as the MSD coil is a stretch. I believe that Dave's comment was facetious. I think he was commenting that you would be hard pressed to show that a coil is responsible for as slight a difference as 1 to 2whp.

As for Neons.org, its been my experience (active member since 2006 with 999 :D purely technical posts) that, in general, the more experienced members will basically say the MSD is the same as stock except that it has a pretty color to it :p

Now what I did show that made a difference was the Screamin Eagle coil, I was able to get better spark and up to 29lbs with just a switch to the screamin Eagle.

Thank you Mark, I was being facetious - you are going to be stretching it a bit if you hold a simple coil swap accountable for a 2 whp loss on a 400 whp car - that is a 0.5% variance. There sooo many other factors that could account for minute output changes.

My Granatelli coil held fine to 28 psi without any sign of break up, plugs gapped @0.023".
