Me again, shouting into the void again.

Recently installed a used compressor in my car, got the A/C functioning great. With the A/C on or off, if I give it some throttle once it gets up to 3.5k-4k RPMS there's a noticeable whine that sounds exactly like a supercharger. It doesn't sound like belt squeal or a bad idler/etc. It's not grinding...it's just legitimately a supercharger like whine.

Is the A/C belt too tight? Is it not tight enough? I don't have a belt deflection measurement tool, so I have no idea what "proper" tight is for the A/C belt. It seems a little too tight, so I'm gonna back off the tension a smidge and I'll report back.

In the meantime, any ideas or tips from experience?

Found the problem today.

It was a boost leak. I didn't tighten the clamp to the TB elbow/UICP joiner only kinda snugged it.

I'm an idiot(but this isn't news to anyone). ROFL.

Well, at least I replaced the bearing. It DID need it.
on/off and it does it could be the bearing on the tensioner itself since its a constant pully that moves all the time, the AC unit pully bearing ONLY spins when the AC is engaged via the clutches. once its OFF the clutch spins and the bearing does NOT spin.

I was actually looking for a used AC pump the other day as I want to look into reservicing them so if you wanna flog your old one for me to learn from let me know,

I think you’re right. It was an old tensioner I refurbished.

In case anyone is curious here’s the sound. I took a video.

Loosen the tension on the adjuster, freely spin that pulley and you will likely hear it growling once you spin it. if it's gone bad replace the bearing for a fresh one

Problem is I can't really find a replacement bearing for it. There's a pulley on rockauto that's called a "tensioner pulley" and says "With A/C" but it looks completely different than the one on the car. I guess for $35 it's not a huge loss if I try it out.

If I do/when I do I'll update the thread. In the meantime feel free to continue to chime in anybody/everybody!

This is the bearing I used:

You didn’t happen to document your process did you? What issues were you having? You were one of the ones I was hoping would chime in because you one of the only other ones to have functional A/C in a 1G. Lol.

Just look on the bearing. Can't remember if dsm is replaceable but I think it is. Some of the bearings are some common across lawnmower, cars etc I keep a couple in the toolbox because they are so cheap.

Follow the guide that @EC17PSE posted. I'm pretty sure that's the same guide that I found in 2019. If you can do wheel bearings, this will be a cakewalk. It was harder to R&R the mount than to pound out the bearing.

Mine was giving a metallic squeal mostly on cold startup but gradually became more constant. When I removed the pulley it was a little rough to spin by hand.

I tend to tension my belts in increments. I start with it on the looser side but "feels tight" and gradually tighten until no more belt squeal.

Do you still hear the whine if you loosen up the tensioner to the point the belt is just hanging?

Is it possible it's your power steering pump?

I admittedly haven't checked the PS pump. The PS still works and it doesn't really groan or cry when I turn the wheel, but maybe it is.

I ordered the bearing and it should be here Thursday. We'll see what happens. I haven't loosened the pully to that level as I didn't want the belt being ripped off or sticking into the alternator belt/popping it off. When I pull it off, I'll see how it feels. I might even put a drill on it and spin it fast to see what it does.

The bracket/tensioner was EXTREMELY caked in grease and dirt when I first got it, so honestly that might be the problem. All that dirt and grease may be inside the bearing too. But we'll see after I replace it. I'll update the thread either way!
