Hi there,

This is my first post after a long time lurker. I wanted to keep my stock appearing engine bay and would like to replace my 32 year old cooling system. Is there a difference in cooling radiators for automatic and manual trans 1G DSM AWD turbo? Not sure why eBay distinguishes automatic from manual when it comes to radiators?

Thanks!

If your radiator isn't leaking or badly corroded to where it has to be replaced I would leave it. I have had terrible luck with aftermarket OEM type radiators. They usually break off at the upper hose inlet or sometimes the tanks crack on top. I have yet to have issues with OEM unless they are rotten out and get pinholes. Even the rotted out ones I attempt to braze the pinholes before tossing them because aftermarket are just so crappy. I've started using the aftermarket aluminum tank replacements if I absolutely have to replace one but sounds like that's not what you are looking for.

I agree with keeping the stock radiator for as long as you can. If you're worried about contamination or corrosion in the cooling system just flush it with plain water a few times. If it's really dirty/rusty try adding a few ounces of vinegar and that will help clean things up. Keep flushing until it drains clear and clean. Then fill with coolant. I did this on my 1g because it sat for a long time. Unfortunately the stock radiator was too far gone and I had to replace it with one from RockAuto. It does not leak but was warped out of the box and the plastic tanks just feel cheap.

What options besides the Mishimoto are available today for 1gs, they are not my favorite? My Fluidyne has started leaking out the tube fin area after 20 years, boooo. They don't make them anymore, Koyo only makes 2gs, Megan doesn't make them. Is there anybody that makes custom ones, I would think any of the FMIC people would make them since they are the same thing.

The 3 row model will not allow the AC condensor to fit. Also the Radiator mounting brackets require trimming. It is still a TIGHT fit. I would recommend calling them and asking if they will make a 2 row one for you to clear all those items and also revise the top end tank so that it does not interfere with the mounting brackets.

As others have mentioned the OEM is best, but no longer available. The Koyo one was amazing, I had one and sold that car. I also had a PWR one and it was not straight out of the box.
