1G Starter replacement

Im looking on rock auto, and the manual starters are cheaper by about $20 on every brand. Is there a reason why they are cheaper? Do they line up the same and work the same? The manuals seem to have this extra hose on the bottom, any reason for that?

Hi- The factory remanufactured starters are done in bulk, so should be WAY cheaper than having your one starter custom remanufactured. That would be my last resort. I have no idea why there is a hose (that's weird), or what the exact difference is between the manual and automatic starter. However, I do know that REMY would not go through the trouble of maintaining inventory of two different versions of the starter with different part numbers if one version would serve both. I would suspect the difference is in the ring gear between the manual flywheel and the automatic torque converter. It could be a difference in the bendix gear shape or throw. Buy the one specifically for the your version of the car- the automatic. In the end this is much cheaper than trying the manual, chewing up the bendix, then getting stuck with a non-returnable part that is greasy and damaged and having to then buy the one for the automatic anyway. At $105 I'd probably spend a couple of days rolling around in the dirt trying to pull one from a junkyard first, but that's just my cheap, masacistic nature :^)
