I have a 1998 gst and it won't start. It was driving ok yesterday but when I got home and I tried to start her she wouldn't turn over. She doesn't click or anything. I took the old starter out and installed a new one, I also change the ignition switch and the battery is ok, I cleaned re terminals. What can it be? Please help. it's manual.

Does anything come on at all when you turn the key over. Like do your interior or dash lights come on? Have you tried jumping the starter?Check your connecter on the starter and make sure it is pushed on good and that it has not became disconnected.

well all the lights come on inside, the ignition light come on. I have tried jump starting it by pushing it and poping the clutch. How can it be the alternator if the starter won't even engage? It doesn't click it's just quiet.

I made sure all the connections are nice and tight. Including ground. I can't figure out which relay is the starter relay.

can someone tell me which is the starter relay please?

The 2g starter relay is located directly behind the stereo in the center console but I'm 99.9% sure that it's good. If it was going out though you'd hear a clicking sound when you turn the key with nothing happening, but if you want to replace it then be my guest.

First check BOTH your fuse boxes (one under the dash just above the clutch and one in the engine bay by your air filter). If they look good you should do two things, remove your alternator (so you can take it into autozone to be tested for free), and while your there purchase a chiltons manual. Since you don't have a chiltons and you need to take out your alternator before you go to autozone, I'll write up my alternator removal procedures so your not winging it.

tools:
you'll need a ratchet, a 10mm socket (radiator fan bolts), a 12mm combo wrench & 14mm combo wrench for the alternator bolts.

1. disconnect battery ground and jack up your car from the front. (don't forget jack stands)

2. remove your radiator fan on the drivers side. 2 bolts on the bottom, 2 bolts on top, and an electrical quick disconnect. then lift it out and set it aside...

(now most manuals/people say to remove the power steering pump but its A LOT more work to do this and you'll be able to maneuver the alternator out anyway)

3. now disconnect the electrical connections going to the alternator. (i believe there are two total)

4. loosen the alternator brace. its a sliding bracket that runs along the top part of the alternator. break the bolt loose thats closest to the front of the car first (don't remove), then completely remove the back bolt holding on the bracket and remove the brace from the alternator.

5. this is where you might get a little dirty. slide under your car and locate your alternator. there's one bolt that slides through the bottom of it and secures it to the motor. loosen that bolt and you should be able to pivot the alternator up to take tension off the belt. once you can turn that bolt with your fingers slide out from under your car and come from the top of the engine bay to unscrew it completely. (hold on to your alternator cause it will fall if you don't)

6. now manipulate it around the motor, trying not to bend the fins on your radiator, and pull it completely out!

7. take that trip to autozone and get that sucker tested. (and don't forget the chiltons)

Install is exactly the opposite, and don't forget to install the radiator fan after you get the new starter in. tension on the belt shouldn't be too tight, you should be able to push on the belt and watch it move a little.

Hope this solves your starting problems...

thanks for the write-up. I do have ahaynes manual. the weird thing is that if I push start the car she doesn't turn off, it's just when I turn the key nothing happens, my dash light work andwhen I was driving the car earlier before the problem my turbo timer was reading between 13.5-14.00 volts. I lifted the car and I made sure all the conections were tight on the starter, so I'm kind puzzeled.

I know this is repetitive but you have checked ALL connections on the starter? There is a small black push on connector that just plugs onto a tab on the very top of the starter, mine came loose and it did the same thing, it wouldn't even click. If the battery is fully charged and has the right Cold Cranking Amps then it would still start if the alternator was bad.

Also check the plugs that gose into the transmission i had mine pop out and car would not start and lights and all came on just no start

also your clutch safty plug might went out makeing it think its still in gear
