16T as a 16g substitute? Less $. Td05h turbine swap?

Just like the title says... I can get Volvo td04-16T chra's for pretty cheap across the border in drug war land. Is it a major problem to swap the td04 turbine with a td05h? I have a couple 14b's to goof around with, and the price of a true MHI 16g is getting too rich for my taste if there's an alternative. I am hoping maybe a 16T compressor housing, the Volvo chra, and a 14b turbine and housing would make a comparable substitute for less cash... Unless the swap would make it so difficult, it wouldn't be worth it.

What do you turbo builders think?
 
Of course. Roughly the same as a 16g. I won't be pushing it to the max for reliability, but 330ish would be nice... With some overhead to spare if I want it.
 
Yes, but that is with a td04 turbine. I want to stick a td05h on it from a 14b. I assume (you know what that means) that the turbine swap would change that flow capability, wouldn't it? It is a 16 series compressor wheel... I just don't have any info on the 16T and have never seen one personally. I know it is finned like a 14b (even spaces), but I'm not really sure how large of an impact that makes.

The other option I have is convincing the guys that have these parts to sell me the compressor wheel and housings and stick them on my spare 14b. I don't think they are going to like a gringo trying to get them to sell parts of parts though...

It's just hard to pass up because these are damn near perfect looking OEM turbos and I can get them for $40 US deniro.
 
Hmm yeah I see what you mean, I wasnt able to find an actual compressor map on google Ill do some more searching.
 
Yea, I've been looking for a map and haven't seen any for the 16T specifically. Even then, if I bastardize the compressor wheel with a bigger turbine, finding accurate flow info may be a real problem. I'm hoping someone has messed with one and sees this. Otherwise this is just guesswork. The problem is these guys move their stuff in lots. This is a part of a lot I don't think is going to be around for all that long.

Now... I'm a bit in the dark as to how I would read it if it were stuck on a different turbine... Does that change the compressor map any?

That and TD04 shafts are smaller, so the compressor wheels would have to be machined along with the cover(s) you use. Costly, not worth the gain.

Your cheapest bet which is a much easier option is to follow Evo X guys around and rob their factory 152G6 compressors- the inducer is slightly smaller than an Evo III compressor so the largest compressor cover you could start with before machining would be a Small 16G, but aside from that the wheels are identical.
 
Thanks for clearing that up before I committed to anything. I thought the td04 turbine shaft was smaller, but I wasn't sure. In that case, no deal. Those turbos are a 3 hour drive away, but I saw a couple of them here yesterday, and they look brand new... So they are either real good Chinese knock offs (which they looked too detailed to be) or real good shape Volvo turbos.

At $40 a pop though, what if I ran 3 of them in series? :D (that's a joke for you people with no sense of humor LOL)
 
I'm a decent fabricator, but I know jack about series turbos. I'm going to have to look that up. What is the theory behind series compounding? 1 turbo presses it to XX psi and then the next presses it again, I get that, but how does the second turbo not peak out on its efficiency and just wind up causing drag? That is what puzzles me...

Like I was saying, for $40 a piece, they are really nice. Plus, I don't think the guys selling them know what they are worth or how nice they are...
 
From talking to a friend of mine and the link to the stealth 316 page (should probably be verified) I hear that the Volvo turbos are pretty close to bolt-ons as you can get for a 3000gt. At $40 a piece i am thinking there may be some cash in pocket opportunity...:aha: Are they the ones with the built in bypass valve?
 
They were.... They sold that lot of parts yesterday. I wasn't sure about the flange pattern compatibility and didn't want to have to mess with them to sell them to anyone but Volvo owners. Plus, I was not sure of the origin. They did look nice, but then so do Godspeed turbos, right up until they grenade under the hood... The guys selling that lot were shifty looking anyhow, so for all I know they could've been stripped off stolen cars. I didn't want to be too nosey either. I would prefer to not see what the inside of some zeta's trunk looks like.
 
16T is small a 19T compressor is just slightly smaller then a small 16g compressor.
