16g turbo help

I had another post, but I deleted it for an updated help thread. I have found a deal I think but would just like the advice of you guys who know what youre doing (not me). I think prices are a no, no so for my friend Benj. I can get both of these turbos. From what he told me one is a MHI 16g and one is a fake big 16g. I'll try to attach photos so you guys can see them. My questions are do the look ok, what all will I need to install them (2g) and what other items do I need to not blow it up. I'm stock except a RS blow off valve and intercooler (I know nothing about them either but it's all metal?). He did tell me that they both have slight play in and out, but no up and down or side to side. Less than 1/2"? Any thoughts please.

Looking at the top picture,the one on the left with the threaded wastegate acuator arm would be the "fake" 16g. The other one looks to be a 14b,not a 16g.

Top turbo is a knockoff 16G worth roughly $200 new and 50 cents used, the bottom is a 14B worth roughly $100-$125 used as long as it has no shaft play or the turbine wheel isn't dripping with oil.

If both have anywhere near 1/2" of in/out play, they're both junk. NO in/out play is acceptable as the wheel has roughly .040" of clearance before it spikes the housing. That much in/out play means the compressor wheels on both turbos have been ground down considerably.

do you think the play he mentioned would be useable? my t25 is trash (smoking) and does the O2 housing look like one for a 2g dsm? Will I HAVE to have SAFC, fuel pump rewiring, injectors, new piping, etc? or can I bolt it up and drive? It's my daily driver. I'm only going to be running the stock 11-12 pounds of boost.

if the turbos have shaft play at all dont buy either one! puttin a 16g on pretty much stock injectors and fuel pump is worthless. i just spent in all abt 1200 on a 16g, fp manifold, fic 1000cc injectors, 255 walbro fuelpump and my dude to tune it and fix other stupid #### that went wrong. so unless you have the money id hold off and save a little. just my advice

You will need a 2G install kit. Basically every DSM vendor sells one, here's Road Race Engineering's version: Road Race Engineering's 2G 16-G Turbo Install Kits and Parts

I'm not quite sure why you deleted your earlier post, several people gave you good advice on that thread.

if the turbos have shaft play at all dont buy either one! puttin a 16g on pretty much stock injectors and fuel pump is worthless. i just spent in all abt 1200 on a 16g, fp manifold, fic 1000cc injectors, 255 walbro fuelpump and my dude to tune it and fix other stupid #### that went wrong. so unless you have the money id hold off and save a little. just my advice

^^ just because you are not familiar with the capabilities of your car, and what is actually required, dont tell others they cant do something.

Sounds like you dont do your own work and or aren't to experienced. You can safely run a 16g turbo and not cause any harm on the engine with stock injectors and pump. If you increase the boost, then you may run into trouble.

Dont be negative to others because you were naive to learn how to do things yourself.

+1 16G's are perfectly fine on stock injectors and fuel pump as long as you keep the boost down. There is no reason he can't get a 16G now and crank up the boost when he gets supporting mods.

If he was just buying it because he wanted a new turbo, I'd tell him to wait. But that's not the case, his T25 is bad and he needs to replace it.

Great guys, thanks. And "Card" I just deleted because I didn't want a bunch of posts and make anyone mad. I take all advice put on here. I can do all my own work, but brand new to turbos and dsm's also. I gladly take the advice of you guys. Thanks so much.

And Im hoping it is just the turbo problem here since the only time it smokes at all is when it boosts (more than 4-5 pounds)?

Well I got a 16g on the way. Hopefully have it in by the end of the week. Thinking I might do the fuel pump rewire and just run the stock boost pressure and I should be ok. Until I can do some more mods. Thanks for all the help. I did learn that with a little more research now ho to tell the 14b and 16g apart. Could have saved me some questions earlier in this post. Hoping I have a noticeable difference from my T25.

Chances are there won't be much of a difference from the T25 if you're sticking with stock boost. If you want to get a manual boost controller and turn it up, get an aftermarket boost gauge and a datalogger to monitor knock & your injector duty cycle. Then turn up the boost a little bit and see what the engine is doing.

I've got to save a few bucks for the boost controller and some engine monitoring of some sort before I mess with the boost. I might go ahead and do the fuel pump rewire just to be safe. If not much difference performance wise, it's not a big issue. I just have to swap so I don't trash my engine due to the t25 smoking and probably about to trash.
