1990 eclipse gsx 5 speed. Will go into all other gears fine but no matter what I do it will not go into reverse. Tried adjusting the cables and that made no difference. Tried all the tricks that people use, such as going into other gears then into reverse. Tried to put it in reverse using the levers on the transmission itself and it will not go in. Removed the switch assembly for the reverse lights to check that it wasn't interfering, and that it still had the washer in place, which it did, and that made no difference. Any idea what would need to be replaced? Having no reverse gear is very very very annoying. Thanks!

If it won't go in by manually shifting the linkage on the transmission than it is inside the transmission. Does it just grind, or does it make no noise at all.

Remove the end case and have a look. If it isn't obvious what's wrong at the 5th/rev hub then the problem lies inside with the reverse idler gear. Loose nut on the end of the input shaft can screw some stuff up. When in 5th does the shifter move when you get on and off gas? If so that nut is loose.

When the reverse idler teeth get rounded it becomes harder to shift into reverse. In this case, quite often if you let the clutch out to where it just barely starts to grab while trying to shift into reverse, it will slip in.

Tried that several times and it wouldn't work.

I will open up the end case this week and let yall know what I find.
