2G Eclipse GSX not shifting into reverse.

I just bought a 98 Eclipse GSX, on the 19th of this month (Oct) however, after 1 day of driving, I turned into a place to turn around and went to shift into reverse and the stick would not go into reverse. It WILL go into 1st through 5th gears without any problems. It is weird to me that it will go into 2nd and 4th and weird that it will go into 5th due to it being the same rod (Correct me if I am wrong using this term). Could it be a gear in the transmission? I have read that if you move around several gears it will eventually going into reverse if it is linkage.

No, even with the vehicle off it does not shift into reverse. i know it's not a synchron because if it was I couldn't go into 2nd or 4th as well. has to be linkage is what I am thinking.

Any noise during trying to go on reverse?, have you inspect the Linkage bushings?.

Disconnect the Linkage and do it manually to see if you linkage is not good. n

First of all your car does not have shifter linkage, it has shifter cables, second, reverse does not use synchronizers.

What u can do is remove the outer plate off the tranny. You do not need to pull tranny out to inspect 5th/reverse.

Put car safely on jack stands and remove the front passenger tire. Now you can see the tranny. Pull out all the bolts holding the outer plate over the fith gear cluster (14mm socket) can't remember but there's like 8 bolts that hold the cover on, (guess I should of first mentioned to drain tranny oil first after gettin car on jack stands)

With the outer plate removed you can now see the slider ring mechanism that alows reverse engagement. If there is something wrong it will be obvious

Pull the outer cover off and post us some pictures. Pulling that outer plate is the only real way to inspect your reverse gear. Trust me, I've had to do this serveral times before because I kept havin a fith gear issue.

When the reverse idler teeth get rounded it becomes harder to shift into reverse. In this case, quite often if you let the clutch out to where it just barely starts to grab while trying to shift into reverse, it will slip in.

reverse does not use synchronizers.

It does have a synchro on most transmissions. There are some that don't. It's also one of the only ones you can change without complete transmission disassembly because it's right on the end case. A more likely issue are the ones already mentioned, rounded idler teeth or a dragging clutch but one could inspect/replace this synchro easily.

Two things. Check linkage on transmission. It could be that the shifter counterweight is hitting the intake pipe, or radiator hose or whatever is also in front of it when shifting into reverse.

Second, remove the reverse light switch (24mm deep socket) on top of the transmission by the passenger side frame rail below the fuse box area. It has the electrical plug running to it. You could be missing the aluminum crush washer under it. If so, you will need a new reverse light switch as it is now damaged, and a new crush washer. I will supply you with the part numbers if I am correct.

I'm having what I believe is the exact same problem does anyone know of a way to verify reverse being rounded besides taking the cover off? I just don't want to drain trans fluid ect if I don't have to, also how hurtful or how much damage could this cause say if you didn't fix or for a month or so sorry for thread jacking this is just the first thread I've seen with an issue like mine an I've tried shifting (what's pictured) without the cables connected an it won't budge so I came to the conculsion its in my trans but would like reassurance an thoughts on the damage it could have been doing by just not using reverse

1) The gear teeth that get rounded are on the reverse idler gear (which is inside the tranny: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=124775&d=1310159199 and see attached pic) - not on any gear inside the cover (which is 5th BTW). If this is your problem it doesn't hurt anything, it's just frustrating. In this case, quite often if you let the clutch out to where it just barely starts to grab while trying to shift into reverse, it will slip in.

2) But do as twicks says in post #9 first before anything.

3) Can you get into 5th w/o any problem? If not, you may have a worn select lever shoe (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/mai...t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.html#post152266167 and http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=142964&d=1343796178).

Did you ever try double clutching it by going from first to reverse? My neon that I had didn't like reverse that much but that seemed to help.

Ye I've tried everything 1st to reverse 5th to reverse any gear to reverse nothing even with the car off the linkage is not hitting anything my reverse sensor has a crush washer I don't know what's up. Oh and all other gears work perfect no problem at all whatsoever
