Hey guys! I was hoping my first post woulda been a Introduction with someone nice pictures but it isnt. I've had the car for less than a week and last night I encountered this issue where I shifted into reverse. Let out clutch applying gas and the car will not move. The engine keeps revving/spining. 1-3 gears works fine, although I have a tough time with 4th,not sure if it affects this. 5th is also fine. Although my issue with 4th might just be because I'm to stick shift. I did some research and I've heard it could be a bunch of issues.
  • Shift Linkage Cable
  • Broken Shift Fork
  • I need a new transmission

Anyone have any experience and know how to test these things. Thanks guys, I look forward to joining the DSM community!

UPDATE: All the bottom gears, (2,4,R) are near impossible to get into. So what could that be? I can get into 1,3,5 no problem though

Shifter can move from reverse to 4th, what does that indicate? thanks guys!

I'm guessing a broken shift fork or rail. The selector doesn't have a lockout. It can move to any position. It doesn't because there is a rail in the way when you select a gear. If the rail is broken then it may not be in the way anymore and you could move the selector from one gear to another. This is inside the transmission.

Before assuming it's the tranny, check out the shift cables. Make sure they move all the way they are supposed to to get into the gears and also make sure the shift cables hold down clamp on the tranny is holding them properly.

If that is all ok disconnect the cables on the tranny end and see if you can manually shift into all gears by moving the shift levers with your hand. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/mai...ranny-lever-positions-work.html#post152838939.

Another possibility (where I'd place my money) is the select lever shoe is worn down: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/mai...t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.html#post152266167.

luv2rallye, you took the words out of my mouth.... don't forget to also check the shifter cables at the shifter base, if those get loose at all you won't be able to shift and the way you made it sound it sounds like the screws are coming apart slowly because one thing happened then it got worse slowly... pull the shifter boot and check those cable...

Yup thats it in that first picture, the lower cable is frayed, and i had friend look when i was shifting and there was a lot of play with the bottom cable looks. I've been looking for a replacement since last night, haven't been able to find one. Any suggestions? Official name is shift cable?

EDIT: found these two

just need a confirmation if this is the part, im pretty it is.

Yes it is. They usually come in a set. Sometimes the clip that holds the cable onto the bracket comes off or the bracket gets loose. Make sure this isn't the case before ordering. The cable housings must not move around while shifting.

Wasnt the clip. Tried to go in there last night with 3 friends. couldnt get it out the firewall. dropped it off at a mechanic today. this defintiely is something not for beginner, and intermediate. really difficult. also when we tried to put it together we ####ed it up and couldnt even it into neutral.
