Trans only shifts into 3rd and 4th. HELP!

My trans will only shift into 3rd and 4th gear. There is no side movement of the shifter. I did remove the cotter pin that holds that linkage to the bracket on the trans and the linkage and shifter can easily move like it should. So it has to be something in the trans of the bracket itself. Any ideas? I can buy a new one, but I don't have the money for it until next paycheck and I am trying to get this thing running for a meet on the 25th. Help please!

What happens when you try to shift it into first? Fully locked out? or does it grind?

With the linkage connected. It will only go into 3rd and 4th gear. I can not push the shifter left or right, only up and down.

ahhhh.... okay gotcha. My idea is out then. Let me marinate on that for a second. I am sure someone will chime in that knows their stuff about trany's.

My guess is that all those gears are fine, it has to do something with the bracket, or maybe a rod inside of it that connects to the bracket

mmm... maybe, a bent bracket is the only possibility out of that. Guess I'll take a look. Thanks! Let me know if you have any other ideas. I just want to drive this thing

When this happened to me. I had to gently hammer the lever (where the shift cable connects to) down or up. This was shortly before the bearings in my differential (F5M22) gave up.

Hit the lever that controls the movement to get to 1,2 and 5,r gears back and forth with a hammer. I can now get into all gears. Sat in storage for two years so it must have just been stuck. Thanks for all your help!!!

should have shot WD-40 in the linkage area to loosen up what was binding it before smaking it with a hammer - just hope smaking it didn't do any form of damage.
