I hear a 'creaking' sound when I shift from park to drive or reverse. I also noticed this same problem on another 2g eclipse. Both cars have about 140-150k miles on them so I'm assuming this is just motor mount weardown. I replaced 3 out of the 4 motor mounts (the fourth one that wasn't replace is the one next to the A/C pipe lines) but I still seem to get this sound. The shifting itself is not a problem, in fact is goes into drive or reverse just fine. Any suggestions?

I remember this on my avenger, the power steering pump has, let's say, 2 modes of operation. High speed and low speed. When you shift from park to a gear, it engages the power steering pump in a manner that sounds like reeds by the ocean for a second or two. This is a chrysler design I think, because other chyrslers make this sound, and mitsu's do not.

any chance the suspension is creaking from the car being put in drive? I had a blazer the the front end would rise just enough to make a stupid creaking sound every time I put in in drive
