Who here uses a q45?

If so, with what intake manifold?
Remote mount iac, or no?

How do you like it overall?
Is it worth it? Or just a big PITA?

..asking because I bought a jmf race manifold flanged for a q45, with a modded q45.. no coolant passages.. And a Nissan evap purge valve in hopes to turn it into a remote mount iac..

..shout out to 99gst_racer

If it doesn't work I'll just get a magnus one.)

Ps.. I know I'm gonna get people that say "just get an s90"... But I don't already have an s90. That's why I'm asking about the q45, not because I'm thinking about getting one. Because I have one already.

That being said.. Thanks for your input guys..

I am also curious about this for another project. I'll be using the same nissan valve regardless of what tb I get, but I'd like something with coolant lines (possibly a fiav of some kind) and a BISS of some sort too, and a q45 tb seems to be the ticket without going s90. I already have an s90 for my talon, and don't want to spend that kind of money for this particular project.

In for answers!

Exactly. I got a jmf drag and q45 both on the cheap together..

Seems like i got almost the whole car setup for top end, except the turbo itself is a tiny .63ar hot side on a 6165

It's rebuilt brand new, ball bearing chra 0 miles and has a billet 11 wheel comp and a brand new gt37r turbine wheel

So the .63 with the billet 11 blade, it should spool right away.. I'm just hoping it works well with everything else on the street..

It being a street/drag Car I'm hoping (when I get it going) that I can get it to behave when it's time to relax Lol

... I know the common response is "just get an s90".. But I'm trying to find successful street stories on the q45.. If there is such a thing hah..

I have the Q45, and have not run anything else in over 10 years. I feel it is a great option out there, I do not use any IAC, I do hook up the coolant lines. I am able to have consistent idle, with no surge, no stalling, etc. I have kelford 280 cams and able to dial my idle down to rock solid 1100-1150rpms. I could go lower, but the car vibrates alot with the lower idle and I like having more vacuum.

I have a Q45 w/ a JMF Drag with coolant lines connected and without a IAC. I have used this combo with Kelford 276/272HL w/ 1050cc injectors and Kelford 280/288 w/ 1800cc injectors. The both case I could make the idle stable at around 1100rpm without A/C. With A/C, I set the idle at 1300rpm then it is stable.

It does not have a "biss" screw, but it does have a screw that adjusts the throttle plate opening. Essentially and idle screw. It is a 2mm allen key with an 8mm jam nut just under the throttle cable.

From the looks of it the s90 has an aluminum shaft and plate. Doesn't seem like a good idea, for forced induction to me.
Do the q45s hold boost well? I know lots of people use them so obviously they work. I used a accufab tb once and it leaked like a sieve.

Ok that's good to know, thanks. I was wondering how readily available rebuilt parts are for the q45s as well? Didn't find much in a quick search last night.

They are aluminum, but are fairly beefy. I haven't installed mine and won't for a while, but I don't think they will pose any problems under boost. But that will be tested eventually.

Are the coolant lines necessary? Someone welded my ports shut before I bought it LOL

Damn
Another with coolant lines LOL. Hopefully mine works as well as you guys got yours working.

Did you guys get the idle right just by messing with the idle screws and stuff?

How are cold starts?

Coolant lines aren't necessary, but in cold climates (or if you have an insane IC or pre-tb water injection) it can help prevent the tb from icing up. Otherwise, in warm climates most don't use them, unless you were also wanting the q45 equivalent of a fiav, which certain ones come with, but arent always freindly with the dsm setup, as I've found of late.

The original shaft seals of Q45 are very soft rubber, can't hold very high pressure. It is common to replace them with some o-rings. I replaced the shaft seals and did a boost leak test @35-40psi and so far holding good, no leak at all.

I control via AEM EMS, so maybe the situation is a bit different from yours.
About the cold start, in my case I open the throttle a little bit while cranking and after the engine starts just keep opening the throttle for 30 seconds, then the engine doesn't stall.
