Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

i dont think the color of burning oil would go from white to blue just because its the turbo WTF

Burning oil is always blueish. Coolant is white. Do a compression test. Remove the vacuum line from the wastegate to see if it builds boost then, but be careful, It will not stop building boost at all like that. If you lost a headgasket you would not build boost to well either. Does the smoke smell like oil or coolant? What do your plugs look like? Is there water in the muffler? Does it do it when you cold start it? Need more info.

The turbo is blown.

Don't ask me why, but when a turbo goes, the color of the burning oil is almost always whitish/gray, more commonly when synthetic oil is used. The old "white smoke is ALWAYS coolant" adage doesn't fit here. Especially if the smoke doesn't smell sweet and smells instead like... burning oil.

Check your intercooler pipes. Watch your shoes, since about a quart of oil is probably going to dump out of them. Check your exhaust, as I'm sure there's oil pouring out of that side too. Once you verify that the turbo is failing, replace it or have it rebuilt immediately. Don't continue to drive on it.

are you pushing coolant? you could always drop your oil pan and see if the oil looks milky. if it is you blew your head gasket. could also be leaking valve guides or seals

LOL shaft play! any smoke under the hood? that would be a dead giveaway. i'd say turbo problem. the turbo gets coolant and oil so a turbo malfunction would create a mixture of coolant smoke and oil smoke depending on the severity of each leak. that could be why there is a mixture of different types of smoke. take that bastad off and look at it

I've been rebuilding turbos 7 years now and I've yet to see one that allowed the coolant to mix with the oil. There are possibilities- perhaps it was cast wrong, cracked somehow, or on some Garrett-based turbos the screw holes for the thrust plate go into the coolant cavity....but in no way can a turbo "blow" in a way that allows coolant and oil to mix without some other epic failure.

i dont know much about turbos and what not but to me if its a constant cloud then its getting a constant flow of oil into the intake

i would pull off your IC right before the TB and see if theres some oil in it
and if there is its most likely the turbo

White smoke is coolant/water. Blue smoke would be oil. Blue smoke might indicate a turbo seal, head gasket or leaky valve stems. All of wich apply for a naturally aspirated engine as well, except for the obvious one. White probably indicates a head gasket. The only reason it would be a turbo is if he has a water cooled turbo. Lack of boost plus white smoke? I would recommend a compression test or cylinder leakdown test. That would tell you alot about the top end. My money is on a head gasket though.

Does your car have a stock head gasket and bolts? You may have over boosted the head gasket. Def wouldn't drive it until you do some tests and find out if its a head gasket. If you haven't already warped the heads its probably coming.

Edit: I just remembered that burning coolant smells sweet. Like a coolant leak. Head gaskets can allow oil into the cylinders too. It is usually coolant but the oil galleys are passing through there too!!

you are right but the smoke can mix

My first experiance with a blown turbo was a Impreza STi. That STi didn't boost and it was smoking black. The ECM was expecting boost and more air so it was throwing more fuel at it. It was running EXTREMELY rich and puking black smoke when it should have been boosting.

I am getting some greyish smoke after i idle for a little while or sometimes when i start my car. It goes away after i drive for a couple minutes though and then it comes back after idling for alittle while. i have about 1/4" of shaft play both in and out and up and down on my t25, could this smoke be my turbo or is iot something else maybe valve stem seals???

if anyone has an idea please let me know, also i dont get smoke when i'm in boost.

Your turbo needs rebuilt. Any lateral play means you need a rebuild. Your horizontal play is a lot as well.

Journal Bearing Turbocharger Rebuild Service - DSM Classifieds

Or you could do it yourself assuming your shaft and wheels aren't damaged.

You would be better off getting a better turbo than the T2(small) but if money is an issue a rebuild kit for above would only set you back $40-$60 + any tools you do not have.

Did anyone ever think it could be condensation I know when i run my car i get lots of moisture until its warmed up. I had a 92 GST that did the same thing it was a bit blueish grey sitting idling. It could have been running rich at idle since i had no way to monitor. Just a thought.

Running rich would be black smoke...if you are running rich you are burning extra gas. White is generally coolant burning...if its blue/grey you are burning oil. So i highly doubt its moisture, sounds like you have a leak somewhere and are burning oil.
