Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

All kinds of stuff wrong here. Not sure how much money you want to sink into the car but I would start considering how much your willing to invest. I would first do a compression then leak down and from the sounds of it wear some crappy clothes when you do the leak down because you might get sprayed with oil and coolant from various unknown locations on the block. If compression and leak down yield good results then start looking elsewhere.

x2 on the PCV, they simply pool oil in your intake manifold runners if they can't hold your boost pressure and if left long enough can eventually get oil everywhere. Get rid of the PCV or run it to a catch can then back to the manifold if your concerned.

if it's any consolation the more ethanol there is in your fuel (e85 for example), the more it will change the color of exhuast smoke (from a rich mixture). It wont be the same color as the typical black puff from rich mixture with straight petroleum fuel.

What is your engine management? If you have link or EMS you can adjust the throttle tip in/% of recovery for faster fuel response when letting off so it doesn't go pig rich!

I assume you're either running your BOV recirc'ed or blow through setup with it vented, as i've seen a million people overlook this as the reason why their mixture goes rich during shifts!:ohdamn:

Sounds like you have some serious problems under the hood. As was stated already I would change the PCV out if you haven't already done so becuase it's the cheapest solution. Check all your oil connections going to the turbo and seal on your Valve cover because these gaskets if not seated correctly tend to wear quickly. Also the seals around your spark plugs could have dry rotted. Did you check your turbo for shaft play and see if there was in oil there? If that still show's no result do the compression check to see if the headgasket went on you. Hopefully it's not a cracked head or turbo. Goodluck. Let us know your progress and maybe we can help further.:thumb:

The head studs should be replaced while the head is off. Old bolts tend to stretch under lots of pressure. For under $100 you can buy ARP head studs which will last forever.

Always replace the stock head bolts/studs. They are stretch to yield as odormat said. ARPs are a great alternative. After an overheating or detonation related headgasket failure it is always a good idea to check the head to be straight and true. A machine shop can determine if the head needs to be machined back into spec or replaced. extreme detonation or overheating can cause the head to crack at which time a replacement is almost always the only solution. When using any headgasket other than the stock material, the trueness (straightness of the mating surface) is even more important as a perfect mating surface is necessary to get a good seal on a high performance aftermarket head gasket. Always use a good torque wrench and the recommended lubricant on head studs to insure accurate torque readings. also, any fluid/debris in the head bolt holes can prevent proper tension on the fasteners and head resulting in premature headgasket failure. be sure to clean and chase the head bolt holes before inserting and torquing the new fasteners.

Cesar - the oil you are describing definitely points to a head gasket failure as a result of detonation or extreme overheating. The blue smoke does point to oil consumption and the white to coolant. a leak down test should be conducted or simply drain the coolant and and oil separately and look for signs of cross contamination. a leak down test checks for carbon monoxide in the radiator and should be conducted immediately after the car is run for a set amount of time. be careful to make sure the coolant isn't pressurized when the radiator cap is removed as it can result in severe burns. The oil everywhere is likely caused by combustion gasses pressurizing the oil passages during the head gasket failure and upwards of a quart of oil can be ejected from between the head and the block during the gasket failure. Look on the back of the head between cylinders 2&3 as they run hottest and often times are the site of first failure. Continued operation with a damaged head gasket can permanently damage your engine from overheating and coolant contamination in the oil causing insufficient lubrication. Good luck.

thank you so much for all the help! i will try new head bolts first, but my auto teacher (who happend to work at chrystler in the hay day of the talons) and he said it is possible for the oil to be leaking into the down pipe and causing the car to smoke blue when it gets hot. also is there anyother place that oil and anitfreze could be mixing besides the head gasket? and it only smokes when i let it idle for about 10 minutes. i dont know if any of the info i just gave helps? i just wanted to say what my auto teacher told me ( and see if he isnt just going crazy)
thank you for all the help! i don't wanna sell my talon! i wanna keep it boostin! :D

ans since im a new DSMer i was wondering where this PCV is located?

When's it smoke? You gotta be more detailed to let us help you out. Possibilities with just saying white smoke is turbo seals are shot, valve stem seals, or a head gasket.

i dont know much about turbos and what not but to me if its a constant cloud then its getting a constant flow of oil into the intake

i would pull off your IC right before the TB and see if theres some oil in it
and if there is its most likely the turbo

i dont think the color of burning oil would go from white to blue just because its the turbo WTF
