Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

Im going to have to say the oil is from a seal underneath the oil cap. If its leaking from around the whole valve cover then id say its the valve cover gasket. Your problem with the white smoke would mean coolant being burned off. Check your dipstick to see if the oil is milky and also sometimes when its cold out here in MD the exhaust will burn white but thats just moisture, not sure how cold it gets there but im sure its probably not cold enough.

ok now do you see smoke all the time.. or is it mostly between gears (releasing gas pedal) if you do?
then it may be blown seals on turbo.. check for shaft play and or broken fins..
if its white smoke all the time.. check coolant, see if you lost alot.. it can be burning due to head gasket between cylinder and coolant tunnel..

oil on valve cover can mean oil spurting out the dip stick.. meaning blow by or the spark plug gasket or valve cover gasket is worn.. easy fix for the gaskets.. blow by? not too easy.. worn rings

do compression test..

goodluck

full boost, wot.... hmmm is it a constant white smoke?? is it alot, where u cant see behind you or a puff after you release?

as for the oil.. look underneath the hood.. to see if you have splashes of oil.. or clean everything and then drive it a little hard stop and check where the culprit is..

also check your turbo for shaft play.. just remove the intake off turbo... there might be very little play side to side NOT IN and OUT..

well by full boost i mean 15 pounds and yea i can see it when i look back but then it goes away. ill check for shaft play. as for the oil it pools up around one of the screws near my spark plugs

Has this been resolved?

Please note also that smoke from a turbo leaking oil will be more whitish than burning oil from the combustion chamber (more blueish). I would not assume that it's your head gasket yet.

Make sure you are running the correct size oil restrictor if you are feeding oil from the oil housing. If there is too much oil pressure it can blow past the seals and into your exhaust. Also your turbo could have leaky seals.

You could try running the car with just the manifold connected and the turbo left off. See if it still blows white smoke (may be really loud though).

is it a brand new turbo? if so it could be all the stuff on the inside of it burning off, like the glossy stuff, mine smoked a whole bunch, i mean like a lot to the point i thought something was wrong and i checked over everything like 10 times and nothing was leaking, i drove it for around 2 days and the smoke went away, sometimes turbos smoke white, like a lot when you first put them on. i was really worried about it because mine was smoking a s&*^ ton and it ended up being fine in a day or so. If you are sure that you dont have any leaks in there run it for a day, see if you start loosing fluid or if your smoke starts to go away, let it burn off. I know it can be scary but just monitor your fluid levels and watch your gauges, you should be fine, if you are sure there are no major leaks. good luck

I had the exact same issue with my 1g. The seals were leaking on the turbo, so I replaced the turbo and it was fixed. As for the oil on the valve cover, mine was a combination of a leaky oil filler cap and blow by. I replaced the oil cap, and rigged a spring on the dipstick, then all the issues were fixed.

try pullling your plug caps out and check for oil if there is oil in the spark plug gallies than your valve cover gasket is leaking my car did the same thing

I just rebuilt my engine for my 1990 laser rs, my timing belt slipped and destroyed everything, so I used mostly parts from this engine in building my new engine. I finaly have it running and driving so we were taking it to get inspected and about 5 miles away from home, I started blowing thick thick white smoke out of my exhaust, nothing was coming out of the hood or anything. So I flipped around and headed home still a ton of smoke, even after turning my engine off for a quick run in with the law I was blowing smoke. But then about a mile or so from home the smoke thinned up and was more whispy. Also when i put my rpms up my oil preasure goes up, not over the top but it goes from about the handle of the gas can to right over the spout. all of my other gauges read just fine. what is going on with my car and how can i fix it? please tell me its not the piston rings? could it be just the rings getting in the groove of things?

Do a compression test and a leak down test. that should give you some things to rule out, or in . it does kinda sound like a head gasket. not to alarm you , but those two test should help.

haha i hovered just around 5 lbs of boost or so. I have the bigger turbo of the two stock ones, I hadnt had any trouble with it before the engine blew out. Also later after it cooled down I drove it around more just a few miles around the neighborhood, and there was no smoke at all. we are going to get a compression tester tomorrow to test that, but we had just done a valve job, due to some bent valves, so im hoping I am getting compression.

could be the seals in your turbo. oil is usually a blueish tint, but it can be hard to determine if you're freaking out about how much of it is dumping from your car. and, if it's a head gasket, it's gonna run like crap. so how is it running other than the smoke?

fine really i got my car home with no real hiccups, other than the smoke and the police and a little high oil pressure, and there was nothing going wrong when i drove it later

I agree with BrokenPOS.
Probarly somethin with the seals or inner parts of the engine.
Engine is all ok?
Fluids ok and rebuild the engine proparly? Didn't saw any weird things?

come to think of it... back when i was having problems my car it would blow a crap ton of smoke whenever i would hit the throttle after cruising around for a bit. my bike did the same thing and it was blow by. have you done a blow by test? it could be that too. check the intake side of your turbo for oil residue.

but it was a consistent thing. if i cruised at 3500 rpm on the highway and then hit the throttle or let off, it would smoke. bad.

It could be tubo seals, but if it was white smoke my guess would be coolant. Most likely head gasket. When you said you used things from you motor did you reuse your head gasket?

Remember white smoke is coolant, blue smoke oil, black smoke is gas.Do a compression / leak down test. Also start the engine with the radiator cap removed if the system has pressure in it (blows the antifreeze all over )probaly the HG is bad. Also smell the vapor if it's coolant the vapor will have a faint smell of antifreeze.

no i did a new head gasket on it, and i dint notice anything wierd while rebuilding it, how would i go about doing a blow by test? and why would it have stopped smoking when I drove it later? if it is blow by how did you fix that?
