Which Aftermarke Air Filter? K&N? eBay? [Merged 11-7]

Didn't you just tell him that he should go with the K&N?? Now you're saying your using an ebay filter that works just as well?

Which is it?

Well he wanted to know which one was better so I answered his question. I have only heard good things from k&N thats why I suggested that. Then someone mentioned other options so I suggested something else aswell.

Like I said.... I've only heard this from one person. But it makes sense to some degree. The air filter's job is to do just that... filter the air. I've never seen a shred of proof that by putting in a K&N filter you gain anything from it performance wise. But they're known for being "less restrictive" (which I read as "less filtering") which in turn would lead to more dirt passing through to your engine internals, and "possibly" having a negative effect on them.

I'm not saying that this is proof that it can lead to engine wear/damage, or that it will ever have a negative effect on your engine at all (I personally think the mechanic here is a little over-reactive regarding this whole air filter thing). But, if a K&N air filter which is seemingly less restrictive and works without harm, then I see no reason at all why somebody shouldn't use a $10 re-usuable ebay filter.

Anybody tried them? Anybody hate them? It seems to me that it wouldn't be to hard to crate an air filter, but then again I am no air filter scientist ;) I was looking into this one or maybe this one . I was also wondering what is the deal with that HKS filter that cost $80?

Okay, so far so good then? I had already got the round one since I thought I would try the foam, but I might also get a cone one since they are like 15 bucks.

Stock filter? Cone filter?

For stock, the K&N drop in is nice. $50+/-.

For a cone filter, ExtremePSI has several different outlet sizes available, 3", 3.5", or 4". You can get any size adapter there as well, I believe.

Well really, i was looking at the k&n filter and others. I need a new one because i am doing a full tune up, but i do want to upgrade to new piping. I really want a cone but the kits cost alot and well... i am on a budget till spring

I have owned a few eclipses, and they all had a different air filter. Stock air filter is way way restrictive, especially when it is dirty :p The two ebay cone filters the cars had alot less surface area, even though they all ended up connecting to the same intake air senor. The K/N FIPK was like 150 I think, is carb exempt, and to me has been the best quality compared to the cheap rubber stuff on the other air filters.

But like others are saying, it is just a filter..

Well with most clames K&Ns are a bit exerated (well a lot). My wife bought a new in 2001 a CBR929 after it was broke in we put it on a frends dyno to get a baseline. after the baseline runs we changed the air filter and made another set of runs. Between the runs there was less than 1% change in HP & TQ

To change the subject slightly on the same bike I picked up a spare muffler and knocked the cat out of it then tested the same way and again less than 1% change.

Those tests took place on different days but they were made less than 30min between runs.

last year I got myself a 98 gst and was planning on getting a k&n filter as my first mod, but one day i was at pep boys with a friend and noticed they had a cheap aluminum adapter for my mas. I decided to try it with a k&n cone filter when i realized that they didn't have any in the right size in stock. So i picked up one of the "generic" filters they had that claimed to be on par if not superior to k&n. After installing it i was immediately impressed with the performance, on hard pulls i feel that there is more power,,, although that may just be because of the increase in turbo sound messing with my head.I have had it for six months now with no problems, seems to be working great, although i do plan on replacing it with an apexi or vibrant one sometime soon. that is of course unless i find that this one is in fact working just fine...

i believe it was labled as power adder or some such brand...?
