Which Aftermarke Air Filter? K&N? eBay? [Merged 11-7]

Thanks, i do take very good care of my car, i have had some of my family or friends joke with me by asking if i also eat under my hood. Both filters were cleaned and re-oiled before a comparison was made, as you can see in the pictures. Sorry for the picture quality, i had to downsize to 37kb before it let me upload : (

Now the density is probably coming into play. I imagine the Injun filter will filter out smaller particles than the E-Bay filter which is more "open" and allows the air to pass easier.

Nice job on the filter "box". I need to make one for mine as this summer my intake temps were outrageous.

How's it working for you? Do you also see a lot of 90/100 degree summers?

Jiom is probably correct to assume that it is the different density's of the filter's, and how fine of particles they filter out, the thicker the material, the most it filters, takes longer for the same amount of air to get in. On a side note why not try a CAI set-up Jim? Put the filter right in the hole where the stock fogs go...this is if yours are out. Its what Im thinking about doing.

Yeah I guess they would help when my eye's get older. I have also heard some good stuff about the heat shield boxes. Make sure to use a soft thick piece similar to at the back of the engine bay in front of the wipers to keep a seal for under the hood. It will help keep any dents from occuring, and keep a better seal against the hood so no heat from the engine gets to the intake pipe, also if you have a metal intake pipe, I would wrap it to keep heat from warming the air through that. Oh yeah have you put any though with having a hole in your headlights like the EVO guys go. I will also be doing this so it allows the cool air to push the hot air out the back of the hood.

Until it accumulates enough filtered dirt to close up its passages and be fully as efficient and effective as any other filter ever made.
There's a reason air filters have such a long change interval, and why the factory says to change oil filters with every other oil change- a dirty filter works better at filtering than a new one.
If you're tailgating someone from Sac to Saint Jo on the original Pony Express Trail, you might be able to gather up enough dirt to actually "clog" an air filter. On paved streets, K&N's recommendation of washing once a year is probably excessive by a factor of two. But they do get to sell you more "filter" oil that way.

Sorry for jumping in very late, but I didn't really want to start a new thread on this.

First off, having proven the "a filter is a filter" theory wrong, what filters have the best flow? (and don't say no filter at all... because I did actually think about it for a second).

Situation: I have been tuning for the past few days, and wasn't having any success boosting past 19psi. I did a boost leak test and I am holding boost like a champ (after RTVing my comp housing). Messed with the settings on the Profec-A, and even changed from my Profec-A to MBC and still no change.

Like everything else that isn't right with my car, it stays on my mind until it is fixed. Late last night I had a thought that maybe my new air filter was starving my turbo. I got up out of bed and swapped back to my old filter. This morning I boosted to 24psi (set boost), with no problem.

I didn't think a "high flow" filter would starve my setup. I went to a new filter because the new filter fit in my new cold air intake box better. The old one fits, but it is a close fit and I thought it would be too tight to feed enough air. I guess not. The new one is a sponge type (hks knock-off) and the old one is a vibrant perf. (from extreme psi).

I was just wondering what filter folks that are running higher boost use.

I have been looking for an air filter for my Talon AWD and came across this universal cold air filter from K&N. I was wondering if anybody has used this filter and what they thought about it. (performance, gas mileage, those things).

well its not going to give you 10whp and 45 mpg...

its just an airfilter, a nice cheap mod to free up your intake a wee bit..nothing more, nothing less

i bought a ebay knock off and never looked back.

I spent the 40 some odd bucks on my K&N Filter and it has worked very well for me. A bit pricey, yes. But I haven't ever had to buy another air filter for the past 4 years either. I just clean it up and re oil it every so often. I think it is a good investment but get the filter specific for your car, not just a universal one.

Please edit your post using proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. I will check back later.

My question would be... is there anything out there that shows one filter to be particularly worse then the others??

I know a mechanic here that swears that K&N air filters will ruin your internal seals over time due to the amount of dirt that it doesn't filter out. His view is that if you take an OEM filter and a K&N filter and hold it up to the light, you'll see more light shine through the K&N then the OEM filter.

This is just one person's opinion as far as I'm concerned, but it makes a good arguement that if K&N filters are proven to be good, then does it really matter if you use anything else. Whether it be a K&N, HKS, or an ebay filter... as long as it's a filter of some sort, does it really matter? I hear lot's of people state how K&N filters are "a lot better" but what makes people say this? Clever marketing on K&N's behalf??

Check out his section on filters. The short version is, a paper filter is just about as good as any of the aftermarket filters out there in regards to flow, but it does filter quite a bit better. There's almost no ACTUAL gain from an aftermarket filter, aside from the ability to wash and reuse a K&N (which is why I have one on my car).

K&N was in my car when I bought it, know I have a 4" ebay filter on my turbo and I'm using a maf-t the filter was under $20 as long as it works I dont care.

There's a cheaper kit on ebay with a 3" filter adapter for a 2g mas its up to you.

Depends...if you run the K&N and have long route IC pipes plus use DSMLink to tune with you will have issues during idle. What happens is when the fans come on and you're idling, the air from the fans will blow into the filter and disrupt the airflow into the MAS. This will screw with you idle trims when the fans "kick-on".

The HKS is just too damn expensive...period.

I would just go with a standard 4" cone, but that's just me.

Didn't you just tell him that he should go with the K&N?? Now you're saying your using an ebay filter that works just as well?

Which is it?
