Hi,

I want to change my stock air filter with a K&N one but I have two options so I was wondering which one is better:

The first one is a direct fit K&N from:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=33659&item=7988125930

The second one is conical with adapter from:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=38634&item=7988891487

Is there any difference between the two in terms of performance. The second one is a bit more expensive. I also would like to know whether it is difficult to install the second one as it is not direct fit; I have a 99 Eclipse GS OZ Edition, would it be difficult for a non-mechanic to install it or I need to consult someone?

I was also wondering whether it is worth it to get a K&N air filter or a cold air intake and how difficult would installation be? What tools would I need? Does the cold air intake increases my gas milege, only performance or just is better for the engine?

Thank you.

Svetlin

Typically, the open filter is going to be better for performance and for gas mileage.(Of course, your driving habit also affect this) And for a non mechanic to do this type of install, it should be very easy. I believe that anyone with a little common sense and knowledge of very basic tools can do this. Just make sure that you don't break anything.(you will have to try to break something, don't worry)
And like I said earlier, this can help gas mileage and performance because you are letting the engine breathe, but from my past experience with intakes and exhausts, it just gave me that much power that I wanted to use all the time and my gas mileage suffered a little. But if you drive conservatively, you are good.

The cone lets you hear the intake roar, and I swear that gives you 10 hp on the buttometer. For an N/T, you probably want a cold air intake as well, but don't put it next to the ground.

I use and recommend any no-name filter over the K&N because of costs.

Defiant,

personally I would admit I would do it because of gas milege. Eclipse is terrible on the street - 18mpg and I want to make it at least 20 by some upgrades because this car I use mostly for commuting to my school which is by no high way and I rarely hit anything but a street :(. I heard an airfilter would improve the mpg etc. That's why I wanted to use K&N..For performance I would have never got a non-turbo on the first place but I am just a student, I like the look and feel of the Eclipse.

Thank you for the answers.

((((((ohhh, I would kill for 18mpg....))))))

I second that and having to buy the expensive gas for the turbos is a killer on the pocket
so the solution a toyota rav 4 for every day driving 24 mpg on the street and 29 on hwy

I love my Eclipse GS. It has been my dream car forever and I am not switching even if I have to pay for the expensive gas but if there are some upgrades that could make it run better on gas I am willing to take up on that :)

how much do you get?
I'm afraid to figure it out exactly. But I do spend more on gas for the DSM in one month than full coverage for 2 vehicles in a month (and I'm young w/ a poor driving record). I spend $60/week on gas and I only put 5K on my car per year.

WOW, what exactly are you doing, do you race everywhere. I don't remember the last time my gas mileage was below 18mpg. And how do you drive only 5k miles a year with 60/ a week? That is crazy.

I only drive my car for 6-7 months of the year. Thats why I put 5K on it per year.

Good god. I get a bit over 20 out of the AWD TSi, and I drive much, much too fast :coy:

How many miles on that N/T? How old are the plugs, wires, and O2 sensors? You should be doing an easy 22, unless you're just all over the throttle.

I got around 19 mpg driving conservatively. Around 16.5 when driving like an ass. I have 90k miles on my 95 tsi awd. Think my 90k mile service will help me out at all?

my winter car gives over 3 times better mileage LOL

@Svetlin
its all in your driving, accelerate briskly off the line and just roll around in 4th..

also..you probably drive the excate same route to schoiol everyday..you should know the timing on the traffic lights by now.Learn to anticipate the light changes and accelerate briskly..or slow progressvly to copensate..just avoid the useless stop-go-stop-go-driving.

also, throw all of the useless junk out of your care..increase your tire pressure by 5psi (to about 38)
just try these tricks oput for a week ,and see how much you save

gas milage? well lets see, $20 gets me about half a tank and that only last about 3 days... id say like 15 mpg on a good tank

I would go with the cone air filter just because it has the most benefits(sound, more mpg, probably better flow) I think the stock air filter set up is more restrictive.

@Raph

Does accelerating faster than taking is slowly saves on gas? I think it might but is definitely not as good for the motor. The transmission on the Eclipse is really crappy to say the least, as when I rush the car it switches the gears really slowly in the 4-4.5K rpm on my automatic :(. I usually start slowly after an intersection to put into 3rd gear at 3-3.2K rpm. Am I missing something or 4-5K is still safe upon fast acceleration, after 3.5K my engine starts to roar LOL Maybe I should have gotton a turbo LOL

i didnt mean to mash it,just get it up to 35-50ish(city or highway speed) briskly and just feather the gas aftewards to hold your rolling speed..vs. feathering it to get up to speed

yeah you must be doing somethign wrong to get a mere 18mpg, i fill my tank up and it last me 1 to 1 1/2 weeks sometimes 2 weeks. :dsm: :thumb:

I do not know if I am doing it wrong but this is the second Eclipse I have and the mpg is the same - the first one was 96 Eclipse GS Spyder and this is 99 Eclipse GS OZ Edition, both pure stock :(

wow....i built a cold air intake for my talon, converted it to a cone filter while i was at it....done pretty much all the free mods i can to my car. which is a 95 eagle talon tsi awd automatic!! i drive hard about 30% of the time...and just regular driving after that and still get between 25 & 29 MPG. OD is off in town...and on, on the highway. i dont manualy go through the gears...just let the (retarded) transmition do what it wants.

Dude something is wrong with your car :notgood:

I thought the Overdrive is good to be on at all times as it adds a 5th gear to the poor transmission LOL. Should I turn it off if I am driving mostly street, will this increase my performance/mpg?

i find my car builds boost all the time with the OD on when in in town....but with it off it doesn't. Kinds makes sense takes more gas to get going in a higher gear...kinda like starting off in 9th gear on a 18 speed bike...if you get the idea. It really depends on the kind of city driving you do though....i find myself slowing down for others then having to have to speed up again...but if your just basically coasting around town I'd leave the OD on. I HIGHLY doubt that its going to increase your gas mileage to the point where it should be. In my 90 NT Laser (5spd) i was getting between 35-38 MPG city & hi way mix) i just got 30MPG in my talon this last fill up...highway driving but the car was loaded with camping gear to the point i couldn't see behind my seats :p.....you may want to get a tune up or something.

(BTW with our OD on its our 4th gear...with it off were in 3rd... 4spd auto Tran's)
