ok, before anybody starts in on me. i have already tried search, and i dont think this belongs in any tech forum. so here goes. i have a 16g and 2 bolts are broke off in the flange that bolts to manifold i have tried easyout and drilling them but i cant seem to get through. machine shop was gonna charge me 300 to cut off the corners of the flange and weld new metal. so with that being said. does anyone know where i can pick up 16g, 18g or 20g for a decent price. i know i can get t3 or similar cheaper but then would need new manilfod. so please just turbos that would bolt up. Im on a budget and need my car running asap. also if u can think of any other ways to get the bolts out would be great because it was only on the car for a little over a year.

Use a thin cutoff wheel, cut in a straight line in through the side of the housing and directly through the center of the broken bolt. The bolt is now split in half and should be easy to drive out the bottom of the threaded hole.

You'll then have to get the split in the side of the housing welded up and the hole will need redrilled / tapped.

Why not buy a whole new housing?

So the machine shop couldn't actually DRILL the bolts out? They have better equipment than simple hand tools to do the job. I had that done on mine and only costed $50. I'd say find another shop before buying a new housing IMO

Justin does know what he is talking about so take this for what it's worth as well.

If the bolts are protruding out of the flange, weld a nut to them. After it cools a bit, heat up the corner of the exhaust flange of the turbo, next to the bolt with a torch. Then use a wrench and spin it out with the nut you welded on to it.

well.if you dont want a knock off.. 16g .. extremepsi.com has them for like $600.
dsmgraveyard.com has the so called 16g for $300 but that cant be a reliable turbo... has to be cheaply made IMO.

I just had a broken off bolt removed from my 14b earlier this week by a local machine shop for $30. I had tried for hours with an easy out and had broken several tools before I took it to the shop. $30 was well worth it. I'd call a different machine shop.

Other than my funny comment about buying one off eBay, you should really look into your areas craiglist. I live in Chicago and there is a boat load of real, used, and cheap turbos on the site.

you say call another machine shop but locally there are only like maybe 3 around me. i have taken it to 2 shops and the other one said above mention cutting through the corner and bolt and rewelding but he said that it might get to hot and ruin any seals inside and i dint want to take that chance. as for buying new exhaust housing i have never pullled a turbo apart. is anyone using the dsmgraveyard or ebay 16g? if so how is the quality?

Buy a new housing, it'll be easier. The bolts have become hardened due to the heat from the manifold and turbine housing. Its not an easy job drilling straight into the bolt to remove it especially if its galled in place. A real carbide drill bit is the way to go as it'll cut thru anything without wearing out. They would have to pilot in with a small drill bit, make sure the bolt hole is dead inline with the drill bit, and then use a drill press. Some machine shops can handle it, others don't even want to deal with it.

Get a new housing , if you go with the machine shop option , remove the housing from the turbo assembly that way nothing will be 'injured' .

Just drill the bolt out. I've done three of them in the last two days. Start with 1/8" bit, and work your way up a size or two at a time. It'll be hard to get through the first time, but once you do the larger bits go through pretty fast. Push as hard as you can on the drill and make sure you don't spin the drill too fast and get it red hot or you'll really have fun getting it out. You can get the bolt drilled out and not hurt the threads much. I did this on my BEP Holset housing the other day on two holes, and one a bolt screwed right into perfectly without even running a tap through.

Get some decent drillbits, and a drill doctor (sharpener) is very helpful as well.

It would sure make life easier if they just had a nut on the bottom instead of threads in the housing.

Get a new machine shop, if they can't drill out a couple of broken bolts they shouldn't be in business. On that note, sell me your 16g since it's apparently unfixable LOL
