Wheel lock key broke, broken, lost, etc. [Merged 8-6] stud nut lug key

Hey guys I have some tuner lugs on the 17s on my 280Z, I'm almost 100% positive it's a Topline lug set. The key design is a 3 tip with a slight twist to the key pattern. I can take pics if someone thinks they might have the right key. I desperately need to borrow it for a day so I can get my wheels off my 280Z to ship to a guy. I'll pay shipping and put it back in the mail on it's way back the day after I receive it. My key broke and the lug is on too tight to put the remaining piece of the bit into a socket and get it off that way.

Please get with [email protected]

Thanks!

The key broke off while trying to take the rim off of the car. Any ideas how I can fix this?? Im thinking about welding the key back together???

Just break the wheel locks off, no one wants to steal stock dsm wheels.

Unless you have those spiffy Laser wheels, watch out laser owners. :)

if you break the wheel locks off you possibly will damage the rim. I lost my key, and I found a new one at a local tire/rim store.

Pound a 1/2 drive socket over the wheel lug that won't quite fit on it. You waste a socket, but it's an easy fix for under $10.

If you can find a new key for your wheel locks at a local tire/rim store, whats the point of even having wheel locks on anyway.

I bet you'll never use wheel locks after this ROFL

We "borrowed" the key from our local Mitsu Dealership. ... Took those locks out and replaced them with normal wheel lugs... and then returned the key. Mitsu wanted to charge like 30 bucks or something for it... and we had to wait for it to be delivered..

You sure this could work? I dont want to mess up the rims.

i had this happen also. What I did was slam a 12 point socket on there and the used my buddies 1/2 impact gun. I guess you could use a air hammer or chisel and break the lock? It really sucks i would almost recommend taking it too a shop or maybe a dealer. Good luck.

Just go on ebay and look for another one. If it's the star pattern key, they are really prone to breaking so you need to upgrade to the newer style anyways. My key was a 9 spline and I found a new one for $13 shipped on ebay. I bought it on saturday and it was at my house on monday. PM me and I'll give you the sellers ebay ID. If you really have to get the lugs off right now, jam a 3/8's extension into the lug and that should get the lugs off.

this is just to give you an idea of what i was talking about. my key went inside the lug nuts, but if yours goes on the outside then this is the style you'll need. just cound the splines on your lug nuts and search ebaymotors for "spline key." if i had volks, i wouldn't want to damage them at all. just buy another key and be more careful this time. i know they break easy, but don't use an impact gun. use a breaker bar or large torque wrench and position it so you are pulling up on the bar and not pushing down when trying to break the nut loose.

is the key thats used on the "security" lug nuts on 2G GSX's universal? i borrowed a friends and cant get it to fit. Anyone have any tips or technique to get the lug to match up to the lug nut? ive tried 15 minutes and cant get the damn thing lined up. I just want to get my tire off.

I doubt they're universal, as any other DSM owner could steel your wheels at will. Is your key stripped, or do you not have one? I had this problem on a previous car and I ended up having to use a gator grip to crank it off.

i have one, but its stripped out of the piece it sits in

That happened to me. Discount Tire just took it out.

They can take it out, they just can't torque it back in.

I bought some wheel locks from Vatozone and they work fine.

how do they take it out? i was meaning the tool itself, the piece that is used to fit into the lugnut is stripped out of the lug nut attachment.and where would i find a "gator grip"?

I bought a set of used wheels and lugs a few years ago and while tightening the last bolt the other day ,the splined head broke off inside the nut.I don't know what brand of lugs they are and have no idea what to do to get them off the car,I need about 3 replacements just in case.I've included a few pics in case anyone out there may have a clue where to start looking. The number stamped into the end of the key is 463.

You might be able to find something that will at least work to get them off at a hardware store. Those lugs look really simular to the torque keys that you need to take off the latch part on the inner door jam. (if you ever have taken them off you know what i mean.) I am sure the lug takes a bigger size but if you buy a set you will get a bunch of different sizes.

Yeah looks like a TORX bit. You should be able to get one that size at the auto parts store or hardware store. If not Try some tire shops they might be able to help you.
