Wheel lock key broke, broken, lost, etc. [Merged 8-6] stud nut lug key

You can also use the sockets they use to take out stripped bolts, lightly hammer the socket onto the lug, (make sure it will clear the rim around the lug before you do this) and then loosen it up. You can get them at most any place you can buy tools...Sears has em.

any good mechanic or wheel and tire shop will be able to remove your wheel locks fairly easily and you'll just have to buy a new set

I have a huge problem, my rear strut mount snapped to where the shock is not attached anymore.

I have all the suspension pieces I need, But I have a huge problem. I use lugnuts that are key on the inside instead of the outside. Well, my key is stripped and I cant get the lugs off. I have tried a second key and did the same thing. These F*ckers are on there tight. Now Im looking for a hex head bit that is extremely beefy. I believe it needs to be a 1/2 in hex head.

So.....Can someone point me in the right direction?

For one why would you use locking lug's? If you can't find a hex bit thats big enough then you might have to cut them off with a di-grinder. Try heating them up before using the hex bit.

As a last resort, you could always hammer on a socket that you don't care about that is *slightly* smaller than the lug nut and use an impact gun to get it off. Again, last resort!

They are not locking lugs.......The wheel only has enough space for the lug to fit and not enough for a wrench on the outside.....So, I had to use lugs that were basically inverted.

Im looking for a hex bit right now and I guess Im gonna take a propane torch to them when it comes time.

With a broken wheel lock, I need to have to cut my wheel studs off to have my back tire replaced. Is there an easy way to get this done? I have not done t his before and I would like to know any techniques you guys have used.

It's my last resort and I actually want to save my wheel if I can. I have lugs that could be removed by a center key (no outside edges) and the stupid key broke inside one of the lugs.

Thanks in advance.

Can you take the car to a tire shop??? There is a special socket that goes over lug nuts and wheel locks, kinda like a bolt extractor, that you pound on, and then it grabs the lock as you unscrew it. Take it to someone if you can, if you cant, go to sears and see if you can find something like the extractor.

Okay, so all 4 of my wheels on my car have special lock lugnuts and the key for them isnt in the glove compartment... If I end up with a flat tire, how the heck can I get my wheels off?!? Where can I get a key for the lugs?

A new one cost me $25 I think? Right from a mitsu parts desk. They have something like 4-8 different keys so you may have to experiment.

The new key stripped just as bad as the old one. Damn shops and their air tools..

I finally removed all the locks and went with a different solution. I'll be damned if I ever have another emergency and the stupid key is stripped to hell.

Yeah I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago. If they are factory wheel locks then go to teh dealer and they will give you a new set of lock and a new key for $30 and if its an aftermarket set go to any tire store and they should be able to take them off for you.

I'll probably just get the locks removed, I heard its easier that way. Just so I don't lose the key or anything. I heard that the tire store can easily remove lock lugs. Im going to get a set of new lugs too, because theres mismatch lugs and then the passenger front rims has 2 regular nuts on the wheel! That can't be good can it?

Just so you know, my tire shop claimed there was no way to remove the wheels without the key unless they were destroyed in the process.
Where theres a will theres a way, but just saying not all shops will entertain the thought of removal without a key.

Well, my uncle said that Big O here in town has removed many lock lugs without keys. I dont know if they have a special tool to do it, but the guy told my uncle that its fairly easy for them to remove the lock lugs.

I removed all my locks and put some normal lugnuts. Lock are bullshit, Personnaly, i never heard some1 who got his mags stolen.

Did you check the trunk to see if the key is there?

Taking wheel locks off without the key sucks. A few weeks ago I was helping my friend change the clutch in his newly acquired Evo IX. Of course, no key to be found in the car. We ended up using a chisel to cut a groove in them then loosening them up with an air chisel. Talk about nerve-wracking!

You should beable to get one from a spped shop as well as they useually carry a few differant styles for aftermarket

The trick with hammering on a socket worked great for me. Just use a good socket. I tried one of the cheap china sockets the first time and it split. Tried a Craftsman next and it worked great, didn't even damage the socket!
