What's a good clutch for a 97 Gsx? For street use. Act, competition, fidanza, clutch masters, exedy?
It's a street build I'll be running the 68hta turbo by forced performance

I've had two of the fidanza v2 six puck disks now with the lightweight flywheel and I loved them. However my next set up will be a Southbend. The only reason im making the switch is because im making too much torque for the fidanza. It started to slip but only on hard launches at the track after about 400tq. When I was making about 320-350 I loved it though. Very good clutch for that range.
 
I use the old school act street disc (exedy center with light springs) and newer 2600 plate with bump on fingers. factory 2g or evo flywheel. it will pull the front wheels off the ground on a hard launch 2.3 red with near 500tq. from the wear at 10,000 miles (all hard city and no hwy) it looks like friction material will last 25-30k. I use a hydro throw out bearing that makes the clutch do everything better. smoother, faster shifts, lighter pedal. (about like act2100)

2600pp sucks in a 1g car. the factory pedal assembly flat sucks and flexes too much. dont go there. go SBC if 1g.
stock PP is around 1600lb. ACT 2100 holds far more.
SBC prides there PP has more holding than 2600 but with lighter pedal. the drawback is shorter pedal travel not longer. this is okay for smooth grabbing friction materials but is bad with puc clutches.

I personally hate puc clutches. its the first step in ruining a nice driving car.

Where can I pick up that hydro throwout bearing setup?
 
I have a new act2600 in my 1g with a act flywheel, and 6 puck disk. It shifts fine at 9,000 rpms. With my clutch adjusted out just far enough that it still self adjusts, my release point is in the top half of pedal travel.

In my previous setup i used a 3000gt vr4 slave cylinder and had even more throw.
 
Stock pressure plate is 2200 or so. It is not 1600lbs.
I have had many plates tested at tampa clutch. they have correct equipment to test pressure. dont know where you are getting that figure from? but its waay incorrect and thats why I posted. act 2100 was an awesome clutch. local here had 35r FWD setup pushing 600whp and the 2100 was holding. makes no sense anyone would come out with high performance clutch plate that held 100 less than stock. believe what you want I guess. but I am quite certain my data is correct.
 
I've tested many of them too. A dake press with a 3-5/8 bore and a decent 0-400lb gauge works just fine. Lay the pp upside-down on the table, use a 1" thick steel disc the diameter of the shoe and center the press really good. Not hard to do at all.

Stock was 22-2300, don't remember what the exact number is. I have posted it on here. The 2600 and 2900 measured 2700 and 2950 iirc, and my qm was right at 2900.

I also measured several parts store replacements and they had the same clamp load as stock, only the curve wasn't as flat. The XTD stage 4 measured exactly the same as a parts store replacement.

Lol, if you think that act wouldn't sell a stockish pp at a hell of a mark-up you are way to nieve. I've never had a 2100 in my hands but I wouldn't doubt if it was a stock pp, painted yellow.

As for a 2100 holding 600fwhp, that's not really surprising especially if they were using a puck disc. Either way, a 600fwd setup might not make shit for torque, its also light weight, and doesn't put shit for load on the clutch like an AWD. Try to launch that 600whp on an awd with slicks and it will fade like a cheap suit in the son.

Your talking about all this light duty clutch stuf holding up for you on these early evos, but it's not really relate-able to a guy with a stock weight awd dsm. Your 1000+lbs lighter and have lower gears, way easier to get a car off the line under those conditions. I put way more power through a xtd stage 4 (130+mph traps in a 3350lb car) than you have of anything, and it held until you launched it.

I don't care much about how long you think your 2600 street disc will last. Start racing a 3000lb dsm on it and it won't last very long at all. The current act pressure plates are made from cheap seeco parts, and it is a super thin cover and shoe. Get some heat in it from a street disc and it will crack quickly.

I do like your efforts in getting the hydraulic tob to work, but I suspect there are some shortcomings. If it's truly a lighter pedal than stock and less travel, then you will run into release issues. Hell my first 2600 I was running a 2g big bore slave, and I couldn't believe it was a 2600 it was so light. Then soon as the disc got wore, it wouldn't shift past 7000. I understand the idea of less flex, and less friction, but there is only so much you can do. Remember w = f*d, and there is no free lunch.

servicing 4g63 only cars in the area I could ad another dozen different clutches I have tried for customers. and if you throw evo 8 in another dozen different clutches there. i dont know anyone who has personally used more cluthes than myself. clutch choice makes or brakes he car if you ask me. I have a passion for the subject. many customers used 6 pucs with various plates. hated every last one of them.

the hydro throw out bearing is one of the best mods ever performed on any of my cars car. stock pedal travel is 5.5 inch. am using it at 5.25 for slightly quicker shifting without removing drivability. the car drives amazing with this setup. if you go to RRE page they have some pedal pressures on there. just measured mine at 23lbs. and it would be a 1-2 ligher at 5.5 travel. I tried it at 6in and it was super light, maybe 19lbs. RRE got 29, 36, 43, 45 on four different cars. couldnt really care if i am the only one who uses a hydro bearing mod. the difference between 35-40lbs and 25lbs for same exact clutch is night and day. and what you cant see on paper is how fast the clutch opens and how well the syncros work. you know how your throttle arm works progressively, slow at first then snaps open for second half. thats how this bearing works. the larger flat face has a cam effect. I could never go back to the clusterfuck throw rod setup.
I would be using this exact clutch setup in a 3500lb car. tq capacity of setup is set by how much TQ you want to push on your gears. 450tq is 450tq doesnt matter if car is 2500 or 3500. the 2500 car will just accel faster.

another quick question, All I have ever used in my 1g gsx with just bpu's is rre no name clutch, was great for daily with my set up but started to slip after a few track days. Act hd pressure plate 2600 with street disc has held great but heavy pedal feel. Other than the southbend what other kits have you guys used 300hp-400hp awd range?

I agree with that, except for when your trying to get that 3500lb car off the line with a big turbo. That beats the clutch up way more than a 2500lb car making 450tq with a 16g/20g. Way less rpm, so way less rubbing speed, the lighter car accelerates quicker so it spends less time slipping.

Anyway, can you post a better pic of the TOB where it engages the fingers? What MC are you using? What is the piston area on the HYD TOB? What are you modifying to change the pedal travel.
 
I've gone 130mph in the 1/4 in a 3300lb awd with the xtd stage 4, which measures similar clamp load to a factory disc. I would suggest that the stock pp and xtd disc will do the same. I'd think a stock pp and act 6 pick disc would be good for a little more.
When you say stock, factory mitsu pressure plate? Then as for disc use an xtd sprung 6 puck or act sprung 6 puck?

If your not trying to rev it 9000, try the 2600 again but this time use a 2g slave cylinder. I would also weld a nut on the back of the MC clevis so you can adjust the rod length to the max before it blocks off the bleed port. I had the exact setup on my car and it shifted great at 9000 until the disc got thin. The pedal pressure was super light. Be advised though take it somewhat easy on the launches. Getting a street disc combo hot it what kills them.

Thanks for the great info, I already had to weld the nut to get more travel LOL, but when I rebuild my trans I will just rebuild my pedals again.

Yes. OEM mitsu stock pp. A used one that isn't warped is fine too. You could probably get a aftermarket stock exedy one too, but I'm not 100% on that. A xtd disc will be a little gentler than an act but will not hold as well. The puck compound is different. be advised that this will be a somewhat agressive combo. I have been dd'ing on them for like 10 years. It's not horrible, but it's not like stock. Make sure you get a sprung hub disc, and be careful installing the trans to not let the trans hang on the disc. I suggest using a cherry picker to install the trans.
 
ok I tried calling and emailing but I got no response for southbend clutches , can some one tell me whats a good clutch from them also if you can send the link.
