What would you do in my situation...!! Help Please... PICS..

Well some of you may know i have a 98 gsx eclipse in pretty good condition, has all basic bolt ons w/ stock turbo.. Only downside to my car as of now is that my clutch is slipping and will certainly need replacement soon. Well some guy offered to trade me his 300zx twin turbo pushing about 400hp in good condition...

I am sure I am forgetting a few thing's."

Also he's willing to do a straight trade with getting temporary bov's to get the car to me...

So let me know, what would you do if you were in my shoes..? I know obviously its up to me in the end but im a total noob when it comes to 300zx's and would like some insight from those who possibly have experience with both dsm's and 300zx's...

Well the good news about my GSX is that it is strictly a toy for me, even when built/running right it will still only be driven on weekends and my intentions were to go the e316g, cams, ecmlink with all necessary bolt ons route, so i am quite a bit aways from my goal but i have time on my side... I had just completed all the maintenance on my car running awesome and then a week later, boom my clutch goes, so i have invested some precious time and money into this car already... But the idea of hopping into a car thats nicely done for the sake of spending that much cash to get my car at that point, is sorta nice ...

400hp on a z is much more reliable that 400hp on a dsm. But from a racing stand point your dsm will be faster for less money because its awd. From a dd stand point, i would go with the z. They are hard to come buy these days. Especially in that good of condition. If you don't do much else to mod it, and take good care of it, it will outlast a dsm. Yes it may be a bi*** to work on, but its the price you'll have to pay for a rare car like that. It would give you more of a sense of pride to know that you take care of your car and do what others are too lazy to do. If you end up not liking it, you can get another gsx all day long.

personally, a dsm with a decent exhaust sounds better to me. A dsm with 272's and a good exhaust sounds way better...


300's are nice but I wouldn't take the trade. Unless of course I could for sure sell it and get enough to fund a nice dsm build. there are some cars I'd be willing to trade for, but not a 300zx.

the z is junk always been always will be they are scrap if you really want a z my buddy has one sitting in his driveway since 2000 because it was a money pit its a all black 5 speed twin turbo same basic car and i promise you it sits in the same spot rotting away for a reason its junk not worth the lug nuts that hold the wheels on please do not sell your dsm for a z it will be the worst thing you ever did there is no basic problems with that car they are all huge problems dont do it

It is ####ed up to work on/ Nissan 300TT/. Try to change anything is a lot of time and labor. All the things cost a fortune. Otherwise is awesome car, if you can afford it.. I MEAN it. Do a little research first!!!

I wouldn't do that, your car is a lot cleaner than his. Not to mention, you don't know how that cars been driven or if the maintenance has been kept up on. There's always a reason someone wants to get rid of their car and by trading your car, your only going to create more problems for yourself. I'd stick with your car, not to mention the flat black spray painted rims look like crap.

I would say no yea the z's look sweet but the cost to maintaine them are way more than the eclipse and you know exactly what you have

Just put a good clutch and a bigger turbo in and you'll be happier. Your still running on a stock turbo...

Come on guys..... the Z is pretty rare, especially one in good condition. I think I've only ever seen 2 here in Indy in the past year or so.

DSMs are a dime a dozen, find them all day long on craigslist. That's like saying, "you shouldn't trade your eclipse for something with almost double the re-sale value."

I'm not sure why you haven't traded yet . Your on a DSM forum and a majority are pretty much saying to go for it, it's what your goals are performance wise, and it's a higher value! If you were on a z forum they would prob all tell you too, ... Just do the thing and if you don't like it, sell it for a good turnover. It would definately sell if advertised in the correct areas. You only live once

motor sucks on those cars reaching 400hp on them is very hard, motor is very crouded tight and hard to work on.. if you do a swap than yeah but its a whole different ball game that you dont even know about.. I say stick to what you know because once its down your gonna be stuck trying to fix something you know nothing about.. dream car a 300zx wow you guys are having nightmares other than dreams once you actually own one.. do more research on them before anything..

i know im still new to the whole dsm world. but my buddys got a 300zx tt and as nice as it is( i love it) the thing is a pain in the ass. ive helped him multiple times. the engine bay sucks. the car rides nice. but i would way rather have a gsx/tsi over a 300 any day. if i were in your shoes i may trade. sell right away and make my self a new nicer project(even thou your gsx looks super clean)
so i guess my opinion would either be 1)trade and sell right away and buy a new project dsm or 2) keep your car because of how clean it is and keep putting money into it.

bro, stick with the eclipse unless you are unhappy with it. i would just because i love eclipses, they have such a sexy stock body that no other car can compare. i dont like Zs. they are too boxy and just plain out right ugly but thats just my own opinion. Yeah 300's imo dont have that sex appeal to me as do 2g's... And for me, its not about the money at all as far as, "oh he's giving me a car worth twice as much as mine" but more having a nice, reliable car thats relatively quick... I do love my eclipse but in all honesty if i do trade i'd probably end up selling it to to buy another dsm.....

Yeah and a 300zx tt is by no means a "dream car" to me, that would be a TT Supra

I remember back before "the fast and the furious" came out, TT supras were a cool car and everything, but you could find a decent TT 5-spd for around 10-15 grand. After FATF came out, prices shot up to around 25 and now it's everyone's dream car ...

I mean, dont get me wrong, it is definitely one of my dream cars too, but only because it is actually obtainable. Not like a Bugatti Veyron (my REAL dream car) or something like that.

Then why are you on a dsm forum? Go hang out on the 300z forums. Put your money where your mouth is, if he trades for the 300z and don't want it, are you willing to buy it from him for what it would cost him to get another 2g as nice as his is? To the original poster: if you trade for the 300z remember one thing, we can't do anything for you on these forums when it breaks which will be often, I would check out the 300z forums and even sign up to start posting and see how their support is first, for that matter ask them the same question over there that you are asking here and see what kind of responses you get.

A 300z is not a Supra though, apples to oranges. A Supra is a nice car that is well built, upgradable, and looks nice to boot.

Don't do it, your going to run into problems. My sisters old boyfriend had 2 Z's and they were junk, he was always working on them. Stick with your DSM, they're much easier to work on than a damn Z.

They aren't rare, they are in people's garages not running.

A 2G AWD DSM in the condition his is in will fetch the same as a reasonable TT Z out here. They are both around $5k, with really immaculate Z's going for $7k.

I was helping my friend pick up a bunch of parts off a parted out Z (oil return was blocked, turbo shot oil and hydrolocked #6 cylinder). The engine can self destruct on any car, replacing 4 pistons is better than 6. He was telling us that his $50,000 Z was fast, running 12.8 in the 1/4. My friend's S16g beater had just gone 12.3 with a slipping clutch.

Did he say it was 400whp or just 400hp? I don't think the stock turbos can do 400whp, maxed out at around 380ish.

Yeah, I CAN tell you that 95% of all 300Z's are still on the road...........the other 5% made it home.
