Well I finally got the pan off my 1996 Eclips GSX and found that the balance shaft let go and shot shavings into the 2nd rod bearing and spun the bearing. Now I am looking at a rebuild or purchasing a reman short block. I am leaning more towards rebuilding the engine and would need some tips on where to get the best crank, rods, etc. I am looking to make the engine bulletproof so I never have to go into the lower end again. The car is going to be a daily driver that I might add some easy mods to later on in life. So what all you idea's

here is a picture of the bearings the crank is really grooved.

Ouch that sucks man, got any pics of the crank?

Slowboy racing is running a speacial right now on Rods/Pistons/Bearings and studs for like 850. Then you just got to find a block and crank.

Cant I just reuse the block that I have? Its not punched or anything. I was thinking hot tanked, line honed, etc. Do it right the first time.

Yeah You Can do that...I figured you were going with a 6 bolt bottom end.

Get a 6 bolt bottom end, Build it strong. Then put your 2g head on it!

Ok from what I understand I have to change a ton of wiring, brackets, and retune the car for a 6bolt engine? I really dont want to get into wiring and computer tuning a car. Is that true? I might do the six bolt conversion but I really need to know 100% what is involved because I read another post about not being able to run ac in a 2nd gen with a 6 bolt. (im keeping the engine stock with emissions, ac, power steering)

You can build a 7 bolt to be reliable. Plenty of people have done it. You dont need a new block. If you build it then your probably not going to run balance shafts. So have a machine shop weld the oil holes shut for the balance shafts. If your not going to mod it to all hell then just get the basic eagle/wiseco setup. Its pretty popular and relatively cheap comparted to anything else. But its still a good setup. If you dont want to spend a lot of money then look for a good built low mileage used shortblock for sale.

A 6 bolt swap is not really that hard, just requires a little more hunting (or buying) of parts. The process takes less than an hour to do, if you're experienced enough. Either way, you need to have that crank looked at and more likely it will need to be turned .010". If you feel comfortable with that, just have them turn it, put new rods/pistons in and fire her up. If you'd like a recommendation, I would do research on turned vs. virgin cranks and make your own decision on if you want to reuse a 7 bolt crank. IMO those are too available to NOT get a virgin one and save yourself the chance of the crank failing. On the same token, there are hundreds out there that run turned cranks with great success.
