Need to know which is better ? Not doing work myself . Does anyone know of places in Ky. to have this done ? Car is a 90 talon tsi turbo . Have developed bad oil leak and car has 133k on it . That is the reason for question . Thanks , Ben

you're asking what is better, rebuilding your engine or buying remanufactured engine, right? How much is remanufactured engine and is it local or does it have to be shipped? Does it come with warranty and if so what kind? Then you should price a cost of rebuilding your engine and compare the 2.

if you are rebuilding you could always put in aftermarket parts like pistons, rods, cams, etc

The only cost I have found either way is around $3k . I would like to know how to find someplace local . The warranties are between 2 - 5 years with not alot of price difference . Anyone heard of neco engines or jasper engines ? Like I mentioned , not prepared to do this myself .

Could you please be a little more specific about this oil leak and also what is the condition of the head. You could buy either the head or the block depending on the shape of both. Also, how concerned are you with the idea of a warranty? I know people with Jasper engines and they are all pleased with them, but they are all for little pickup trucks and not turbo 4 cylinders so I don't know how well they remanufacture our motors.

I can't help you on the local aspect, but check out www.slowboyracing.com in the race engince section. They sell a stock 1g block for 1499.00 and a stock rebuilt head for 599.00 with a $300 rebate on the block with a good exchange and a $100 rebate for a good head. I don't know how much shipping would be, but I know those guys will find whatever way is best and cheapest for you.

I believe oil leak is from front seal . Which in itself is an @ $500 job . Then you add in timing belts , other belts , water & oil pumps . Who knows the raping you'll get when its done . Car has 133k on it , so it seems to be an oppurtune time to take advantage and replace the engine . Slowboys prices seem average , but there quality is probably better . What needs to come off of my engine and installed on replacement ?

I'd call Mike @ Slowboy and ask him personally since I'm waiting till next fall to pull mine for rebuild and I live close enought that I'm just putting it in the back of my truck for delivery. While you have the motor apart, I'd do the balance shaft removal so it doesn't go bad and destroy your motor a second time.

ok, one thing, replacing the front seal ISNT a 500 doller job. It becomes a 500 doller job beacuse you should get ur timming belt done, Thats the majority of the money. I wouldnt go rebuilding a motor cause it has an oil leak. I got quoted 425 to do my timming belt,pump,tensions,b-shaft belts, pullys, Front seal and Cam Seals. So ide shop around. I have about the same milage, and I got an oil leak at the same place.
