I have a 91 Tsi awd the I treaded my Yamaha blaster for and I was swear it needed some engine work and thought this would be a great project I have the tool and the garage to work on it so my question is should I buy a built engine already built up or rebuild the engine I have now?

No one can answer that question but you..What are your goals. What is wrong with the current engine.
there is a lot to consider and think about which direction you want to go with it.

If its just say a head gasket then thats not bad.

After looking around if its cheaper to buy a cratemotor then do that.

It is actually the head gasket but I would like to get more hp out of it then stock hp I just sold my dirtbike and have around 2000$ to play with.

The stock internals will hold enough for you for a while. What are your goals power and use? I will say that the head gasket will cost you around $400 for everything you need.

You'll want to do the timing belt (OEM) and recommend eliminating your balance shaft belt (perhaps getting a new oil pump too), fluids, and ARP head studs. A Felpro composite gasket will be enough too.

This would also be a good time to at least get your valve seals replaced.

182 miles out of my 187 mile drive home from buying my tsi, it spun a bearing. Needless to say the guy who owned it even had the stock bov line ran to the mas so it didnt boost. Just a little insight. I spent well over 2g's right now on parts and my engine is finally in the shop. Keep in mind all parts arent rebuild parts. Most are bolt on upgrades. I bought a turned crank and bearings for 230 bucks. It all depends if you either want power or want a stock to lightly modded dd. But the other factor is, do you like to tinker with motors or would you rather have something thats just straight drop in and go.

I think from looking around building my engine would be best I would like to have around 250 300 hp dd now im not sure of this is going to be a hard goal but what would be some good moods to start with off a stock Tsi awd? Since im already going to have the top end taken apart for the head gasket.

300 hp isnt a hard goal at all. Start with a mbc, 3 inch exhaust, front mount intercooler with.hard piping, k and n filter, wideband gauge and a datalogger. That should get you set to around 300hp at the crank. Remember to upgrade your clutch too. And if your gonna swap out for a better clutch, you might as well throw in a light weight flywheel to free up the engines ability to rev

IF the cylinder walls look good still and the engine has good oil pressure than leave the bottom end alone. I'd throw new gaskets on it, new timing components, and thow it back it. The stock short block will handle 300-350 horsepower no problem if you have the car tuned well. Take the money that you were going to spend building the engine and buy dsmlink v3 and you will have a way better running car.
