What MAF do I buy?

94 Talon TSI AWD, 650fic injectors, 16g turbo.

Installed link and heard that I should look at an upgrade to my MAF. What route should I go? 1g hacked, 2g, GM w/MAF translator, EVO? I Have no clue on this and any input would help.

what are your goals? from what I've heard the 2g MAF is good for over 400 hp.

but if you want more power then that, i would go GM MAF/MAFT(thats what I'm doing soon). you can also use the GM MAF as a blow through set up with the MAFT which will allow you to vent to atmosphere, which is badass.

theres also Speed Density if you want to get rid of the MAF altogether. I'm not to familiar with SD so you'll need to ask someone else on that. or I'm sure someone will chime in.

Which version of link? DSMlink or ECMlink V3? If you went V3 I'd just do speed density.

2g MAF is fine for a 16g. Look into speed density if you have DSMLink v3.

I have played around with the 1G maf, hacked mafs and the MAF-T. For a street driven car with a 16G turbo, I would use the stock MAF and save yourself the headache of driveability problems, poor idle, MAF compensation hassles, etc. It could just be me, but I always had trouble dialing in those things and always went back to the stock MAF to even things out. In my opinion, the stock MAF is not really as bad as everyone makes it out to be. With that being said, +1 on speed density as that would be a sweet upgrade.

1g mass- 210hp to 300hp
2g mass 210hp to 450hp
gm maf-t- 210hp to max.

You will need to get a new mass harness to connect the mass to the connectors or unless you can solder, follow vfaq.com for soldering.

If you have v3 you don't need a maf translator. You just have to buy the gm maf cable from ecmtuning for $75.

whatever you do don't put a 3"gm MAF/MAF-T in your car... there has to be a million threads with people asking how to set-up/what settings to use/why doesen't my car run etc etc etc. I would put in the 2g MAF and be done with it.

What's wrong with a maft? Op has link so he wont use it to tune.

O I thought he was going to be tuning with it as well... I haven't tried it for use with link but don't you have to do something with the VE table in link when using the 3" MAF that you wouldn't have to use with the 2g MAF? and he's going to have to have the MAFT clickers in the right spots minimum (not that hard) but still seems like PITA to me

Ve tables are for speed density. As for the maft, you set everything for 0 compensation so its a plain translator.

Or just get the MAFT cable from ECMlink, and don't have any translator at all. Very nice clean setup.

Also, I have been told the EVO MAFs are 500HP capable.

Thats one of the main reasons that I run an EVO8 MAS system on my 1g. Its my daily driver and the weather here is changing all the time. the MAS system does have it flaws, but overall daily driver tuning, it works very well. Most DSMs out there are not reaching the limits of what the EVO8 MAS is capable of.

Plus since the OP has an 1g, he can just bolt up the evo mas without any problem, its a 3.125(3 1/8) inch outlet, it has the same diameter as a 1g MAS. Just use the same intake pipe.

I have DSMLink V3 light. Speed density sounds like the way to go. I will be looking at the forums to see more about this speed density feature. Please chime in if you have experience in this department.

I have a first gen dsm and I converted to a MAP system. I have found that it is far better. You can use a atmospheric BOV without the over richness problems

One more thing, I live in Alaska and as you would figure it gets down right cold here. Which route would be the best for the extreme cold?

A friend gave me a good deal on a 2G MAF and I installed it last weekend with an Injen intake pipe. I am really happy with how it runs. The engine feels a lot smoother and the turbo seems to spool a little quicker than the 1G MAF.
