I found a 1996 Spyder GST for $4900. It is a 5-speed, 91,000 miles on it, white with black top, 17 inch rims. There is 80% tread left on the tires but the guy has a brand new never used set of tires for the car that is included in the price. He says the top doesn't leak, but it had a rip and was repaired, but he didn't like it, so he bought a brand new oem top that isn't installed and is included with the car. He says the interior is really nice, everything inside works, but you have to help the top up a little bit. He doesn't know if the timing belt has been replaced or not. It has a 3 inch cat back exhaust, 16G turbo, apexi intake and a greddy bov. He says it runs great and has no issues. He says he just wants to get rid of it because he doesn't drive it and its taking up space in his garage, which sounds good to me because he kept it garaged at least. he also said that the paint is good on it, no clear coat coming off, no body damage or dents. I'm going to check for crankwalk be looking at the clutch pedal when I turn left. I have been talking to the guy over the phone and I'm suppose to go drive for 4 hours to go and buy it if it checks out on Thursday. Does it sound good? Should I ask him or check for other things on it?

You got the Jetta for a low price. It's definitely worth that much, especially since it had recent maintenance done. Get the window fixed and just drive that daily. When ever you fix the DSM, you can use it as a daily too. I had a 94 Eclipse turbo that I used as a daily. I put 22,000 miles on it in just 8 months. I drove it all over the State for a job I had. That car never put me down. It didn't have any idle problems either. It wasn't prestine but it wasn't junk either. I even took it to the track sometimes.

Focus on the important things first like the timing belt and fluids then, fix the other stuff little by little. You don't have to spend all your money at once. Take your time and you'll by happy.

A DSM with all the maintenance kept up on it was reliable? WTF GTFO!!!! Get out of here with that crazy talk!

ROFL

This guy knows W.T.F. he's talking about...

I have been wanting to buy a DSM but most of them have either too many mods or are just to expensive for what I want to spend. On top of that it is hard to find a turbo are where I live (Saginaw, MI) NOTICE MICHIGAN! but I always look through Craigslist just for fun. I finally found what I think is a great deal for my first DSM. Here is the ad:

91 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX - $1600. possible trade for a quad
4 cyl, 5 speed, Turbocharged, All Wheel Drive, 128,000 miles
Interior is in pretty good shape
Fun car to drive will be great in the winter
Car is all stock, with no modifications that I know of.
It does have some wear and tear on it for its age, but it is a solid car without any rust on it.

With no rust and no mods I think it would be a fun car, I could do mods as I get more money to put into the car. I know I would do the timing belt, other hoses etc. right away.

Let me know what you guys think of the car.
Thanks,
Ryan

honestly there prob is a lil rust on the car, my 97 was in great condition and it still has rust in the truck ,and bottom strut towers..

it look decent for a 91 i would prob off 1200 if it

-starts up first try
-drives straight with no clunks, or weird noises
-no check engine light
-and if it hits boost smooth with no hesitations
- check for leaks everywhere

thanks, I know I am spectacle about the no rust claim and could maybe even talk him down more since it's going to need a lot of maintenance.
I would exam the car very closely before buying and I'm a stickler for details so I ask way too many questions. Even for the price there's a lot of room for improvement even on a tight budget.

When I get DSM'er after DSM'er telling me things like... "Yeah, I keep an extra coil, CAS, etc. etc in the trunk cause I know it'll go out, it's just a matter of when." and

"You get really good at fixing your car on the side of the road with these." and

"These cars just aren't friendly, and they will break..." and

"My car's been driven for 50 miles in a year..." and

"It's never stayed running long enough to have fun with it..." and... you get my point, it doesn't do much to instill confidence in me using it as a daily driver.

Sure, I am sure that there are those people that have everything done right and that the car is reliable. Hell, I think anything would. 22,000 miles isn't a lot of miles for any car to be driven (that's less than a year for me), and I am sure if most of the stuff was newer and in good condition on it, sure, it'd go that far. But DSM's are almost always driven hard and abused, and they aren't known for being friendly to aging. I talked to two people about a GST I found that had 238K miles, and they were both like "Dude, don't even go there, that car is on it's deathbed."

You can argue that they can be reliable, but really, there's hundreds of thousands of threads about problems and breaking down and people bragging about how unreliable they are. I am kind of getting out of DSM's for a while until I get the time, money and motivation to get another one to build right.

I am not bugged by the reliability, I used to drive MG's and Triumphs, I know what unreliability is. But, I am not really in the whole DSM thing right now. I'd rather have a Camry and keep it maintained. I spotted one at the auctions recently with 287K miles. And, oh, next to it was another one with 290K miles. Next to that one was a Spyder with 133K miles. Guess which one didn't run?

No, I understand. And idiots mess up cars all the time. I just want something else right now. No more DSM's till I have a good daily and some money to spend to give it some TLC that it needs.

you should see my trunk i have a big box or every sensor and plug harness end and tools, i know the triumph unreliability i had a tr7 a spitfire and a tr4, alot of those "no start" threads are from dsm noobs who have not a freaking clue how a engine works, except crank the boost up to 30 and saying its modded.

yeah I am expecting to find some rust but sometimes I am surprised so we will see, if i go see the car this weekend I will take pics and check everything out

"It does have some wear and tear on it for its age" and also 128k on it... but honestly i dont know what the going rate of a 1g is now a days.

for being a 91 i bet it does has some wear and i'm not expecting a nice, new car for $1600 but turbo and AWD is a good start for the money.
I know I would be tempted to drive this way too much so hopefully it's not in terrible shape. Pics look alright

not trying to talk you out of it by no means. just be careful. thats some decent mileage. but check it out carefully.

In my opinion 1600 bucks is a lot of money for a 1g with no mods. If you look around you will see better prices. My 0.02. I paid 350 for my 90 gsx. Now I won't sell it for nothing.:hellyeah:

i have a 90 and 350 even seems a bit to high for it after all the stress its put me through. ha ha!

thanks guys, i know where i live is bad for cars but also sportier cars are harder to come by and prices are higher. also i haven't talked to the owner yet so i'm not sure if he's firm on the price or if i can talk him down to move the car

GL. i hope you end up with what you want. if not, you might check out louisville ky craigslist for some 1g's. i think i ran across a couple i would pick up if i didnt have one already...

so im looking for a daily driver to commute back and forth. this is an AUTOMATIC:barf: 420A 2.0 with 140k. body is in decent shape no major mods other than an intake he said the axles are starting to click. i can get it for 1,500 bucks. let me know if it sounds good or should i keep looking.

Its a Scam. This person has already burned a few people for money.. You said it yourself tho, "too good to be true". :( Just follow your gut when it comes to adds like this. Ask yourself if YOU would sell a car that clean for that price!
