My piston rings are fried."Now me and the mad scientist have to tear the block apart." Well me and one of my friends are planning to try to replace them ourselves without taking the block out. I know the general process, remove the head, drop the oil pan, and remove pistons. Obviously I am going to need piston rings and I might as well change other gaskets while it's apart. My friend has alot of experience with engine as far as assembly, me not so much. I don't plan on building the engine....right now, but what else will I need to change piston rings? Basically tools and parts. Thanks for any responses.

Bet, if he pulled the hose off the front end of the turbo, I bet the front end is just filled with oil the shaft has lateral play like crazy.

If so, oil is being burnt off on the exhaust side due to the red hot impeller side from oil sliding past the turbine shaft and seals.

By chance does the turbo sound kind of different then normal kind of whiny or is it normal for the most part? I know it's a completely different turbo, but when my hx35 blew it hummed like a supercharger. Also smoked like yours. Does it smoke most at idle or when coming into boost?

Not sure if it will help you but heres a video I found to kind of answer your question about rings.

I've never heard a supercharger but it does whine now and it's just dumping smoke constantly, idle, acceleration, braking, all the time.
After looking up what a supercharger sounds like, it did that then changed to a lower, bigger sounding whine. What I mean is instead if sounding like air coming out of a small hole it sounded like a bigger hole air was coming hrough

Well before anything, don't drive the car. I welded my rotating assembly when I continued to drive my car under the same conditions, lost ALOT of oil quickly from a bad t-25. And if you absolutely need to drive then; DON'T DRIVE THE CAR. Or you may be looking at a new engine vs. A new turbo.

Kind of sounds like your turbos shot.

So as far as replacing the turbo, is it just buy the new one, unbolt the old one, and bolt new one in? And do I have to get a new cat or anything because of there being oil in it?

Clean the oil from the ic and piping. If there is an extreme amount of shaft play in the turbo, I would also consider removing the oil pan and cleaning out all of the brass bearing material. It will take a while but all the oil will burn out of the exhaust.

I would recommend an inline oil feed filter for the turbo from FP. It can save your new turbo from failure due to oil contamination.

They are $80, but cheaper than another blown turbo. Wish I would have done that the first time my turbo died...

Regardless of the ops budget, go with a 14B turbo size and up, it will suit you better then a T25.

Maybe our star turbo re-builder on here Justin, can help you get a good rebuilt 14B, or get your hands on a blown [yet rebuild-able] 14B and then have Justin rebuild it for you. [link to his profile below]

.Or at the vary least have him balance the turbine shaft, and compressor blade for you, and have him send you a rebuild kit, and then you can put it all together yourself.

my advice contact him and go from there, maybe he has another alternative for you.

So I work minimum wage 15-20 hours a week but my parents said they could help me a little bit. I will contact Justin hopefully he can help me. Thank yall for all the help :hellyeah::thumb:

Last question, from the description could my turbo be rebuilt?

It is vary likely that you can rebuild the T25, as long as the exhaust and compressor wheels are not damaged to badly, but since you said there was grinding noises, I would guess the turbine wheels have already made some contact with the housings.

and another factor is the cost of rebuilding, a T25 is gonna be close to the same cost as a 14B to rebuild, but it won't make as much power.
all in all a 14B is a better starting point for a turbo IMHO.

But then again If you can find a good working T25 for next to nothing, It might be worth a second glance... well if cost is a big issue.

Thanks for that I didn't know that. I'll keep that in mind.
So just confirming what I already knew, I took the intake pipe off and there was a TON of shaft play so yes the turbo is done.

Well I'm glad you found the problem and didn't tear into your motor for no reason!!!

I wouldn't go back to that garage again! Find a local shop where a couple of the mechanics have a DSM. That will be your best bet in the future. That's the only place in town that I take any of my cars! They have two or three 9 sec auto 1Gs, and they've been racing them for 15yrs. That's a LOT of DSM knowledge!!!

I've gotten in contact with a guy who has been working on eclipses for over 15 years that lives about 20 minutes from me so I'm gonna tow it out there and let him look at it.
