Piston rings

I was wondering if I have a fresh hone would it b fine to file the piston rings to the corresponding bore by using ### the piston manufacture says the spec should be or should the bores b checked for out of round first?

Stick the ring in the bore and take the piston and turn it upside down. Use the piston to push the ring down the bore about halfway (make sure the piston is in the bore evenly) and then use a feeler gauge and measure the gap. If its too small slowly file the ring down and repeat the process. Due this for the top 2 compression rings only.
This is how I check ring gaps and it works for me.

Even without checking fr out of round or taper?

Push it down about 1/2" and measure gap. Then push it down another inch and measure gap. Push it down another inch and measure gap. If it changes then you know you have taper.
