What happened to my timing belt?

Perhaps a bad pulley caused the wear?

You may have two oil pan screws that are a few mm too long right underneath the timing belt. You also may not have bolted down the tensioner arm/pulley system and the belt can then slide around. Most likely wrong-sized bolts under the belt.

Yup looks like the oil pan bolts got mixed up and it's rubbing the belt now. Good thing you caught it before it shredded apart.

+1 on the oil pan bolts. Same thing happened to my dad's car. It put a groove right on the top of the belt. There are two bolts that are shorter than the rest and you have to put them in the spot below the timing belt.

Yup. You could always put a couple of washers on the bolts if you don't wanna wait for new ones. Just take your timing cover off make sure they aren't touching.

I had to do my first timing belt job 3 times. It's a learning experience! Snag one of those Continental belts off Amazon for $20. You can get it in two days with Prime. Good luck man! @Galipso

Better to catch it now when the repair is cheap. Easy cheap fix.
