Weird scar in cylinder wall. How?

Ok I recently lost compression in my number 2 cylinder. Started smoking like a freight train smoking me out inside the car whenever i stepped on the throttle. Well what I don't fully understand is what would cause this because a couple days ago I had 150psi across the board and all of a sudden it dropps to 30psi after 82 miles and alot of run time?Yes I can feel it with my fingernail pretty good.

Oh yea and it only goes 3/4 way around the cylinder not all the way. It didn't run hot so I know its not all the way through.

When you did the compression test, is it just the one cylinder that has low numbers?

It kind of looks like its been scored by something and you've got blow-by. The piston ring is probably shot.
 
The vertical scarring is typical of a broken ringland in between the top, and second ring. You will be needing to remove the pistons anyway, and at least have the cylinders honed, and probably bored out to the next size.
 
Well the cylinder isn't scared up to down it's scared side to side. I know the piston rings are bad LOL. Yes the other 3 have 150psi and this one had 30psi ,but I don't understand what could have cause this.Because a couple of weeks ago I don't remember seeing it when i changed the cylinder heads.Yes valves hit at one point. The last cylinder head did. The camshafts dowel pin where the cam gear goes broke off. That's why I had to change heads.As for getting the cylinders hone.. It won't do any good that scar going around the cylinder is too bad to get out with a hone.

How it held compression I will never know. Every one of the ring landings are broken into several pieces.But that still don't explain the weird scar that runs sideways around the cylinder haha.
 
Cracks in teh ringlands come from detonation. Even at stock boost it can do this over time. And it is more likely that this happened at lower boost or moderate power than with any other scenario. Be sure to log this car. If you didn't do it. A previous owner may have tweeks something that could have had this happen.
 
Well when the person who built the motor put it together didn't do alot of things right. I think it happened from me turning up the boost and making a few pulls. but it was fixin to start nocking anyways. something was scratching all the bearrings. As soon as I start makin money or get a job I am going to spend about 1200 on the motor building it right.
 
-Did you turn up the boost without a logger?

-Did you ever do a compression test? I've never seen just one piston crack. If one stock one cracks on me, usually all or most of them do.

-Does the piston say 63D or 63DT in the dish?
 
I have had one piston crank both top and bottom ring, the next piston cracked only the top and the 3rd and 4th were fine. This was a 240k mile engine that was smoking like a freight train.

Every one of the piston ring landings are cracked and broke up. well I looked up the numbers and found out that I am still running 450cc injectors when the guy i got it from told me it was 550cc injectors so I know it leaned out like crazy. I hope to have internet back on soon. Just got a short block instead of paying the internet for this month. I want my car back haha. As soon as I can afford it I will get some sort of logger.
 
This is why tuning blind is such a bad idea. Before you go upping the boost on a larger turbo etcetcetc next time...have a way to data log, get a wideband and get a tuning device. These will help save your motors life.

yea i would junk it.. looks like a headache scoring and probably shakey cylinder walls.. something i would not like to mess with LOL
 
Just remember, you could have afforded a logger much sooner if you didn't waste your block by running anything over stock boost without one in the first place. Having bigger injectors (or in this case just thinking you do) is no excuse not to run a logger. More airflow kills blocks, not more fuel flow typically.
 
Actually just because I broke my car does not mean I had enough to afford a logger. If I could afford one I would have gotten one. I am sorry i'm not rich like you where I could just go out and buy anything and everything I wanted.

Buddy I have not called you about anything to do with my internet or any short block. AND for your info the motor I had in my car was not the short block i bought. I am trying to get my car running so I can get a job IDK how it runs right now I just need my car so get off my back !!!

I should have just kept my street bike.I almost pulled it to the scrap yard this morning.I can't fix my car without money and I can't get money without a job and I can't get a job without a car so I guess I'm just screwed on it. When the title comes in I am just going to sell it and cut my losses.

Well I don't want to rain on your party but welcome to the world of DSM. These cars are not the most reliable, rightly so the more horsepower an engine makes the more unreliable the engine becomes. I have been building these engines for years and I will tell you this I would not trust for one minute to make my car my daily driver or better yet take it for a long distance trip with that being said it serves its purpose weekend warrior! As a word of advise you want to play you will pay especially in this Dsm game;)

Well I am going take both of my blocks to the machine shop tomorrow. This way if they tell me my main block can't be fixed then I wil have them bore my other block. I sold a chevy 5.7 vortec today for 500 ,and I got a cut off of it and got a guy coming to buy more chevy truck parts in the morning. So things are looking up. by the end of the week I would have made close to 300 in selling parts.. So that will pay for the machine shop work for sure. I am going to just make it a weekend warrior ,and use it to drive 7 miles to town and back for work when I do get a job. Well I have owned 2 eclipse before but they were both 1.8s one was an auto but i swapped it all over to a manual. Well what name brand pistons are reasonable priced but can handle 20+ lbs of boost? because I am going to build it up more then when I had got it. Any recomendations on pistons?

I turned the boost down to stock before I got my logger. . .Then I saved a $500 engine. . . Because I am NOT rich enough for a $500 expense :rolleyes: . . . You're in a bad mood because you stepped in a pile of sh!t with your own feet. . . No one here to blame but you. Not your boss for paying you crap; not your car because it wont stand up to blind boost experiments.

Well you aren't trying to save me anything. You are pretty much calling me stupid and I don't much appreciate it and would please advise you not to talk to me like that again please!!.And honestly I was in a bad mood and pretty much still am because of general population. I am going drop it off tomorrow at the machine shop.Then going to see bout getting some pistons. I can get some 1g rods with 2g pistons. for under 100 dollars.

Ok well I dropped my block off at the machine shop and he said looks like damage from water sitting in the cylinder for too long ate at it.It will cost me 340 for them to bore it out and clean it all up and put the new pistons on my rods.SO since I am going to be changing a few things I am going to sell my camshafts and injectors. Well time to list a few things on ebay..

Honestly just find a used engine and drop it in and leave it alone. Without a job you can't afford to build an engine, beat on it and maintain it.

And to the person who said dsm's are unreliable, this is far from the truth. They get that reputation from people who just turn up the boost and blow crap up and come here and complain much like the O.P. here has done.( no offense op just the way it is).

to the op, if you want to go fast you gotta pay to play, buy a logger or equivelent before you even think about modifying the car.
 
Oh I am going to get a logger and I am not complaining about anything. I know it was my fault for turning up the boost but I was mainly trying to find out about this scar. I can't find a used motor for under 800 around where I am so i figured I would just rebuild mine because then I will know it will be more reliable and whats in it than trusting someone like what happened with this car. I was building a 2wd chevy truck into a 4x4. I am going to put it back down and use it for my DD. This way I can take my time getting everything done right and redo a few things.I am getting rid of all the TSI/AWD spoilers and side skirts haha.I am going to work on the list of parts tomorrow on what I need for my motor.
 
A stock-ish rebuild should serve you fine until around 300-400 WHP. I can't afford to even approach those numbers yet (safely, anyway), so I doubt you do either. Then if something breaks, it should be something small and the consequences will be somewhat less drastic, so you can look it up and save more cash by learning (or at least trying) to do it yourself.

And what dsm-onster was trying to get at, is that $125 for a logger is a lot cheaper and will put you further ahead than $500+ in repairs/a rebuild. My BCS was broken when I got the car, so I bought a MBC, turned it all the way down, and installed a cheap boost gauge that came with the car just to get back and forth. Breaking a single thing would have meant big trouble. (For future reference, don't depend on an old car for DD duty unless you have a good understanding of it. I'm one of the many who opened that can of worms. LOL) Measure twice, cut once, as they say.
 
Well I cam rebuild cars. I usually build custom stuff like rwd hondas and jacked up mud trucks. And I can rebuild engines with them not having any problems. So as for the knowledge of how to work on them I got that. I looked up a bunch of stuff last night like all the arp head studs,main studs also.I found a company online I think it was something like westcoastdsm or something like that I don't have the link with me right now. They have a hand help looks like a pda datalogger comes with everything even the handheld for like 80 bucks.So before I get it runnin which will take some time I am also going to order that.My block will be out of the machine shop should be next week.I think I am going to get some 650cc injectors.. and some 272/272 cams. I am still trying to decide if I am going to reuse my rods or get some eagle rods.
