Cylinder wall damage

In the process of rebuilding my engine I stripped everything down. Inspecting the block cylinder 2-3 have wall damage. It feels like ribbed grooves. Did 2-3 run too hot? 1&4 are good.

Plugs will tell you if you had head gasket failure in 2&3. I think it’s time to tear it down and check rings, pistons, bearings and wrist pins. You’re tearing it down regardless.

Guess you’d have to check if that block is useable.

Yes in the beginning of melting and you should figure out the cause and fix it before starting the new engine. And you wouldn't want to use the same pistons. The piston in the pic is already shot, most likely the rings/ring land/ring groove are also damaged. You would probably need a new piston kit and bore the cylinders or at least to hone, it depends on the damage.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I was planning on going .020 over but now will be waiting to see what my machinist says. I bought the engine used just to get it running and dropped it in.
I know the previous owner was beating on this engine and had it sitting. Perhaps he knew of the issue. Engine would smoke which is the reason why I’m doing this rebuild.

That thing has damage from detonation, check your rod bearings for sure while your looking at it.
