Water pump gasket stain?

I was wondering if it's common for a water pump gasket to leave a stain, and if it's ok to install new pump and gasket over it. See my pic below. I scrapped off the old gasket the best I could with a razor, and my fingernail doesn't detect any rough patches. But you can clearly see where the old gasket used to be. Is it ok to install over this? Or do I need to buy some solvent add keep going?

After i scraped my old gasket off, it looked like yours. But i sprayed some carb-cleaner and wiped down the best i could. then installed my new gasket and pump. And it held up just fine.

If it smooth and all the old gasket material is gone.

You will be fine, the stain is common enough

As others have said, staining is fine, but it looks like you might have a some material left there (hard to tell from the photo). Just make sure that origial gasket is TOTALLY gone!

Use a piece of sand paper and a sanding block, if you decide to go that route. That way you won't over do it. Use about 400 grit sandpaper.
