Just got this 2g gsx it has ecmlink I was looking on the ecmlink website to purchase the cable so my tuner can tune my car but idk how to verify if I have v1 v2 or v3 or if it really matters for just purchasing the usb cord the previous owner said he THINKS it’s v3 I would just like to be 100% sure before I spend money

It doesn’t matter, open up the ecu, look at the chipset

Yeah cable shouldn't matter. It really would be strange to change cable design for different version.

Actually unless I'm reading it wrong as well it does seem the v1 v2 v3 use different cables if it only works with v3. So as sasanifab said take the ecu out and open it up and post pictures of the chip. I'm not sure if it says on the chip what it is or not but I'm sure someone can identify.

V3 has it's own unique cable as does V2 and nobody can find the cable (for V2), if I have read old posts correctly.
Open the ECU and take a picture to post.
    V3 cables are still available.

I mean technically the cable should've came with the purchase of the car. So hopefully the deal is him giving you the cable.

Nah I never opened up the ecu since I got ahold of him. figured it wasn’t really necessary to know if I’m getting the cable from the old owner. Tbh electronics in cars freak me out I always seem to some how dry the computers in my past race car. Lol I’m pretty sure it’s the v3, maybe when my off days come up I’ll open it up just to make sure. nothing important I have to do to prevent any damages other then disconnecting the battery first right?

This should be clear from reading the ECMTuning site but perhaps not.

Prior to V3 on the 2G, the interface cable was the proof of ownership. It contains the hardware unique to the product and is unique and not replaceable.

With the introduction of the 1G V2 DSMLink there was a board installed in place of the firmware EPROM in the ECU that added DSMLink capability and became the proof of ownership. The V3 board continued that across both platforms. It is the product and allows standard interface cables to be used.

In all cases if you buy something that the seller claims is DSMLink you should get the cable that came with the kit and you should verify which version your buying before hand by seeing which type of chip is in the ECU. V1 and V2 are standard EPROMS on a 2G or a green circuit board in a 1G and V3 are all red DSMLink boards.

If you get something prior to V3 it's worth upgrading.

Don't be afraid to pull the ecu and open it. Once you get to the ecu, it's only 3 connectors and 2 or 4 screws to open it. Just don't yank on the wires at the connectors and you'll be fine. It's so easy that even a caveman can do it.

Cavemen have this annoying tendency to over torque the cover screws or use the wrong size phillips driver and strip them.
